Chavannes-De-Bogis: Versoix, Moorland and Village History
Accommodation in Chavannes-De-Bogis
Chavannes-de-Bogis is in the canton of Vaud and the Nyon district, and is part of the Terre Sainte region. The Versoix flows through the municipality. The village has an agricultural character and offers various options for your stay, including river and moorland scenery, village history and leisure activities. If you are looking for a hotel, you can start by considering whether you are mainly interested in nature, history or a specific attraction such as the playground or the Poney Club.
Rural landscape along the Versoix
The “Marais de la haute Versoix” is an extensive alluvial moor complex on the plain, with dense woodland. It is one of the last large, well-preserved moorland areas in the region. The Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance lists the area as IFP 1207 “Marais de la haute Versoix”; it also includes part of the municipality of Chavannes-de-Bogis.
Grain cultivation and vineyards are part of the village’s agricultural character. For 2009, 58.6 percent of the land is recorded as agricultural land and 12.3 percent as woodland. The year is an important part of this land-use picture. Together with the Versoix and the moorland, these figures show different aspects of the landscape without defining it as just one type.
Riverside route and nature reserve
A riverside path leads from Chavannes-de-Bogis along the Versoix to its mouth near the small town of Versoix. This identifies both the starting point and destination for planning a hike. The Combes Chapuis nature reserve is also located near Chavannes-de-Bogis, along the Versoix. Its landscape includes oak forests, meadows and moors.
The two landscape features are distinct: the riverside path describes a route from Chavannes-de-Bogis to the river mouth, while Combes Chapuis is a nature reserve near the village. The Marais de la haute Versoix, in turn, also extends into the municipality and is characterised by moorland and dense woodland. If you are interested in a hike or the landscape, these names offer different points of reference when choosing where to go.
The history of Bogis and Chavannes
The area of Bogis became the centre of an agricultural estate that the Cistercians called a “grange” or “cabane”. In 1269, the abbey placed the people who had settled on the estate’s land under the protection of Simon de Joinville, Lord of Gex. Chavannes-de-Bogis was first mentioned around 1477–1485 under the name “Cabane de Bogiez”. The date range indicates approximately when this name was first recorded.
A later building is also part of the village’s history: a chapel was built in Chavannes-de-Bogis in 1928. Together with Bogis’s medieval history, this spans the period from the agricultural grange through the first known form of the name to this 20th-century building.
Playground, picnic area and riding activities
Near the village centre, by the municipal centre, there is a play and picnic area in a tree-lined setting beside a freely accessible meadow. The playground includes, among other things, spring riders, a small hut, a slide and a zip line. A table-tennis table, table football and other children’s games are also mentioned. As the facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit if needed.
The area can be reached from Nyon railway station by TPN buses 813 and 814. Check the timetable and route before travelling. This lets you factor the journey to the municipal centre into your plans without confusing the playground information with the routes along the Versoix.
The Poney Club de Chavannes-de-Bogis offers riding lessons and age-appropriate activities for children aged two and over. The Baby Pony programme includes animal care, petting and feeding, games, riding lessons in the indoor arena and rides in nature; parents can take part. More advanced riders can try dressage and show jumping. The programme may change, so it is advisable to check in advance which activities are currently available.
Traffic arrangements
Until mid-November 2026, the section of cantonal road RC 3-7 between the de la Placette roundabout and the junction with the cantonal road towards Tannay is completely closed to traffic. Check the latest information before travelling. This temporary information is particularly relevant if your journey would take you along the road section mentioned.
