Different interests may influence your choice of hotel in Coppet: the Château and the Musée du Vieux-Coppet focus on cultural history, while the harbour, Plage des Rocailles and hiking trails reveal other sides of the town. When planning your stay, consider whether you are primarily interested in the castle and museum, the architecture, the lake or a hike.

Castle, museum and town centre

The Château de Coppet is open from 1 April to 31 October, Tuesday to Sunday, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Check seasonal opening hours before your trip. Jacques Necker, a Geneva banker and former minister to King Louis XVI of France, acquired the Château in 1784 as a summer residence. On display are 18th-century and Directoire-period French furniture, as well as a collection of portraits and busts. The items on display may change.

The Musée du Vieux-Coppet is housed in a late Gothic building dating from the 16th century and displays documents about the history of Coppet and its region. It also features a reconstruction of a typical early 19th-century interior. While the Château’s furniture, portraits and busts draw attention to its furnishings, the museum focuses on local and regional history and a reconstructed living space.

The historic town centre also shapes Coppet’s architectural character: magnificent houses line the Grand-Rue, and their continuous row of arcades defines the townscape. A self-guided historical tour of Coppet was created to highlight the local cultural heritage and places and buildings of historical significance. The architecture and the tour offer two different ways to explore the town’s cultural heritage.

Setting, waterfront and regional history

Coppet lies between the lake and the Jura, on the edge of the canton of Vaud; the Versoix River forms the border with the canton of Geneva. Coppet is considered a compact town with a green fringe. Open land around the town, particularly near the Château de Coppet, contributes to this landscape.

For historical context, it is useful to distinguish the history of the town from that of the wider region: the long history of Terre Sainte is associated with a Roman settlement, Savoy, Saint-Maurice d’Agaune Abbey and the Barony of Coppet. These connections belong to the wider Terre Sainte region; the history of the Château and the town centre offers a separate focus for learning about Coppet.

Plage des Rocailles in Coppet has a picnic area with tables and grills, as well as a children’s playground. There are also facilities for beach volleyball, pétanque and table tennis. Individual recreational facilities may change; check local conditions before your visit.

Boat trips and trails

From the port of Coppet, you can set off on a Lake Geneva cruise aboard modern or Belle Époque vessels operated by CGN, the Compagnie Générale de Navigation. Timetables are seasonal and may change. Check the schedule if you plan to include a boat trip in your day.

Another perspective is offered by the «Villages viticoles entre Genève et Vaud» hike. It follows small roads past churches, castles, vineyard slopes and small villages. The route’s features differ from Coppet’s historical collections and architecture: here, the focus is on vineyards, villages and buildings along the way.
