The monumental Château d’Oron is a cultural asset of national importance and has stood for more than nine centuries. Its history is connected with the Barons of Oron, the Counts of Gruyère, the Bernese bailiffs, and several bourgeois families. Hiking also offers a chance to explore Oron from different perspectives: routes take you through grazing land and over scenic heights, or connect villages within the municipality.

The Château d’Oron and visiting options

The Château d’Oron can be explored on self-guided visits, including the keep and the covered rampart walk. Guided tours are available year-round on request; arrangements must be made in advance. If you are planning a visit, confirm that visits are possible or arrange your preferred tour before setting off. This way, you can choose between exploring independently and taking a guided tour according to your specific plans.

The agricultural estate of Bellevue in Chesalles-sur-Oron is also part of the area’s history. General Guisan bought and ran the estate and lived there from 1897 to 1902. Another historical trace leads to Au Martinet: the remains of a Roman villa were probably discovered there, within the municipality of Oron, in 1812 and 1813. The Roman road between Vevey and Moudon ran through this location. These accounts highlight different periods—a later agricultural estate and a possible Roman past.

Choose hikes by duration and destination

A hike from La Rogivue to Oron takes about two and a half hours and ends in the center of Oron-la-Ville. Along the way, stretches through quiet grazing land alternate with scenic heights. If you prefer a different destination, consider the easy hike from the historic town of Rue to the Château d’Oron in Oron-le-Châtel: it is 7.5 kilometers long and takes 2 hours and 15 minutes.

The two routes therefore differ in both destination and duration. The route from La Rogivue ends in the center of Oron-la-Ville, while the hike from Rue leads to the Château. When planning your day, you can match these specific details to your preferred destination, without treating the approximate duration of the first route as the time given for the second.

The Grand Tour de la Commune d’Oron offers a longer hiking option: this municipal route connects ten villages and stays within the municipality’s boundaries. The municipality provides a download; the stated length of the Grand Tour is 25.59 kilometers. There are also circular trails over shorter distances. The Tour Nord-Est is 12 kilometers long, rated moderate, and takes about three hours; it follows the Mionne to its confluence with the Broye.

Other circular routes can be distinguished by their landscapes and rivers. The Tour Nord-Ouest passes through wooded areas and along waterways and is about 13 kilometers long. The Tour Sud-Est follows the Broye and the Mionne; its circular route is approximately 9 kilometers. On the approximately 8-kilometer Tour Sud-Ouest, you cross the Broye twice. Alongside the route connecting several villages, these options offer individual circular trails of varying lengths and landscapes.

Crafts, regional products, and views

The Atelier Créa-Tine at Le Bourg 4, 1610 Oron-La-Ville, produces plant dyes and botanical prints and offers training in these techniques. The studio is accessible by public transport, and parking is available nearby. Since both practical access details and the availability of training may affect your visit, it is advisable to confirm them before setting off or directly with the studio.

In Chesalles-sur-Oron, the Laiterie-Fromagerie sells its products in the shop and through a vending machine accessible around the clock. A rustic stone chapel on a hill offers views over the Haute-Broye landscape. Together with the hiking trails and historical sites, these provide a range of options for visitors with different interests.
