Some of Veytaux’s main attractions include Château de Chillon and the mountain scenery around Rochers-de-Naye. Other highlights include historic paths, a Parcours Vita fitness trail and seasonal nature experiences. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you want to focus on castle history, mountain landscapes or a particular activity.

Castle history and a visit to Château de Chillon

From 1536 to 1798, Château de Chillon in Veytaux was successively occupied by the House of Savoy and the Bernese. For a self-guided visit, a map with explanations takes you through 36 rooms. The visit combines exploring the castle with learning about its changing history.

Veytaux-Chillon station is served hourly by regional trains on line S5. Château de Chillon is a six-minute walk from the station, which is 300 metres from Fort de Chillon. Check the timetable before you travel. The Fort is a 20th-century military structure built into the mountain. Musée Fort de Chillon features interactive exhibitions and workshops for families.

Rochers-de-Naye: views, a garden and the seasons

Rochers-de-Naye is a 2,045-metre-high viewpoint overlooking Lake Geneva and the Alps. An MOB cogwheel railway connects the lakeshore with Rochers-de-Naye in about an hour; check the timetable before your journey. At the summit is La Rambertia, an alpine garden opened in 1896 that protects more than 1,000 species of alpine plants and high-altitude flowers. The garden is open seasonally, so check its opening hours before your visit.

Summer and winter offer different experiences: in summer, visitors can observe marmots and alpine plants at Rochers-de-Naye; in winter, they can enjoy winter sports. Grotte de Naye, also known as Grotte du Glacier, has been officially closed indefinitely since 11 May 2026 because of ground movement and rockfall. Check its status again before travelling.

Trails with their own history and clear requirements

The Chemin vers Sonchaux is used by the Via Alpina, a national long-distance hiking route. It passes through an exceptional landscape included in the Swiss Federal Inventory of Landscapes. The municipality of Veytaux built the trail in 1916–1917. Another historic trail is the Remue Path: it connects Sonchaux with Rochers-de-Naye and runs along the municipal boundary between Veytaux and Villeneuve. An old cattle-driving route, it connects the mountain pastures above Lake Geneva with the Hongrin Basin. Dry-stone walls and notable wooden and metal barriers are part of its 1916 design.

Veytaux’s Parcours Vita is in the forest and is designed for physical fitness. It is 3.2 kilometres long, has an effort distance of 5.1 kilometres and an elevation difference of 190 metres. These figures describe different aspects of the circuit; the trail is considered the most challenging Parcours Vita in Switzerland. For a more technically demanding activity, the Via Ferrata des Rochers-de-Naye is a protected alpine climbing route with cables, ladders, ramps and handrails. Technical skills and equipment are required. The route is open from May to October, depending on conditions; check them before setting out.

Seasonal experiences and practical planning

During chestnut season, Champbabau can be reached daily on foot, without a vehicle, to collect chestnuts. At the edge of the chestnut grove, a Castagnomat weighs the harvest. Vehicles are prohibited from accessing Champbabau from the Chemin de Liboson/Route de Sonchaux intersection. Plan your visit as a walk.

An unsupervised bathing area is accessible west of Château de Chillon. Check access and bathing conditions on site. The practical considerations therefore depend on your plans: for visits to the castle and Fort, the visitor routes and travel arrangements are relevant; for the mountains, the season, conditions and requirements of each activity matter.
