Rolle is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), between Nyon and Lausanne. The town is in the La Côte wine-growing region and offers views of the High Alps. The Plage de Rolle, Ile de La Harpe and Casino Théâtre offer different points of interest during your stay. When looking for a hotel in Rolle, consider whether the lakeside, water sports, theatre or history should take priority in your travel plans.

Scenery and history on Lake Geneva

One notable feature of the town’s history is Ile de La Harpe. Local merchants had it built on a sandbank around 1835 to protect the harbour to the west. The island is surrounded by greenery and offers views of Lake Geneva, Rolle Castle and the surrounding mountains. An obelisk is also part of its history: dedicated to Frédéric-César de La Harpe, it was inaugurated on 26 September 1844.

Rolle was first mentioned in 1294, under the name “Rotuli”. Later historical forms of the name include “Ruello” and “Ruelloz”. Frédéric-César de La Harpe (1754–1838) was born in Rolle. He was a tutor to Alexander I of Russia and played a key role in the canton of Vaud’s independence from Bern. His life offers a personal connection to the canton’s history, while the historical forms of the name trace back to the municipality’s earliest recorded mention.

Swimming and water sports at Plage de Rolle

Plage de Rolle is at the eastern end of the municipality and provides access to the lake in a green setting. Swimming is possible there. The bathing area is unsupervised, but is marked out and protected by a line of buoys. Check conditions on site before swimming.

Stand-up paddleboards and pedal boats are available to rent at the beach. Rentals are seasonal, so it is advisable to check availability before your trip. There is also a launch area for paddleboards and windsurfing boards. If water sports are important to your stay, bear in mind that rentals are seasonal and check in advance what is available.

Casino Théâtre and culture

The Casino Théâtre is housed in a building that celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2021. Its auditorium is modelled on Italian theatres, with a horseshoe-shaped floor plan and a balcony. From August to May, the Casino Théâtre presents an artistic programme featuring guest performances and co-productions with theatre companies from the region and beyond. As the programme may change, check the current schedule before visiting.

Getting there and planning your trip

Apart from the courtyard, Rolle Castle is not open to the public. Check the latest access information before visiting. CFF timetables for 2026 are available for departures from Rolle station; check departure times before your trip.
