Discover Unterägeri on Lake Ägeri
Accommodation in Unterägeri
Unterägeri offers a range of reasons to stay: trails through the countryside, experiences on Lake Ägeri and a rich local and cultural history. The time of year also matters: the lido is seasonal, while the cross-country ski trails are a winter activity.
Hiking trails and tours
The Unterägeri Trail is a 7-kilometre circular route with a walking time of 1 hour 40 minutes and 80 metres of ascent. It leads across open countryside, past green fields, with views of the mountains of the Zuger Oberland and Lake Ägeri. One possible detour takes you to the lakeshore. The trail therefore has a clearly specified walking time and distance; the Ägerital Panorama Trail is laid out differently and consists of three sections: from Unterägeri to Raten, from there to Morgarten, and back to Unterägeri along the left-hand side of the lake.
Native orchids grow along the Panorama Trail. Along the way, you can spot butterflies and birds; with a little luck, you may also see deer, hares or capercaillies. Viewpoints offer vistas of Rigi, Pilatus and Mythen, and, when visibility is good, even Säntis. When planning, you can choose between two distinct trail profiles: a circular route with a stated walking time, or a route whose three sections connect different parts of the Ägerital.
The Unterägeri–Halsegg–Zuger Alpli cycling tour also has a specific time frame: it starts in Unterägeri and ends at Zuger Alpli after about four hours. Its highest point is just under 1,400 metres above sea level. The tour combines varied terrain with lake views and wildflowers. The Alpine Panorama Trail, in turn, follows the section from Einsiedeln via Unterägeri to Zug through rolling hills and along picturesque lakes; the stage ends at the Unterägeri municipal building, at the Unterägeri Zentrum bus stop.
Another hiking destination is the Brand–Rossallmig barbecue area above Unterägeri. It can be reached on foot via hiking trails from Nas, Unterägeri or Sattel, and offers open views of the surrounding countryside.
Lake Ägeri, the lido and nature
The seasonal Lido Unterägeri beach resort covers around 10,000 square metres and offers views of Lake Ägeri and the Alps. Its facilities include a sandy beach, a sunbathing lawn, water slides and diving platforms. If you are planning a visit to the lake, bear in mind that the facility is seasonal. Events and experiences on Lake Ägeri include music, family adventures and culinary experiences; check specific dates to suit your travel dates.
The Birkenwäldli mini-golf course is located right by the lake, next to a spacious park and a children’s playground. The playground has several picnic tables beneath the trees. A public accessible toilet facility and a kiosk are next to the mini-golf course. The kiosk serves refreshments from April to October; check the seasonal information before your visit.
For winter, the Unterägeri cross-country ski network includes four trails with a total length of 18 kilometres. The individual trails are listed as 8, 6, 3.5 and 0.8 kilometres long. If you are planning a winter trip, check the lengths before your visit. In the Unterägeri moorland, you should stay on the paths wherever possible, including when cycling or riding. Dogs must be kept on a leash in sensitive nature reserves.
Local history and culture
Unterägeri’s development can be traced through its historic village centre: from a former farming village to an industrial village, then an important health resort, and finally the residential and working community it is today. Individual buildings also tell the story of different eras: St Mary’s Church was built in the early 18th century on the site of a late Gothic church. After being damaged during the French occupation, the Chapel of the Holy Trinity acquired its present form in 1824; a hermitage was built next to it in 1828. The present parish church of the Holy Family was consecrated in 1860.
The municipality of Unterägeri is home to 13 military fortifications. During the Second World War, Philippsburg was the most important bunker in the Ägerital; it also housed the Ägerital’s telephone exchange at the time. For those interested in collections, the local history collection holds up to 5,000 household, craft, trade and agricultural objects from the Ägerital. The Meinrad Iten painting collection contains up to 5,000 catalogued paintings by the Ägeri painter Meinrad Iten (1867–1932).
In collaboration with AEGERIHALLE, Kultur Ägeri offers a diverse cultural programme for the Ägerital throughout the year. The bookable Ägeri theatre tour combines a walk with personalities from Unterägeri’s past and lunch during a cruise on Lake Ägeri.
