Ottenbach lies in the Reuss Valley in the Affoltern district, around 20 kilometres southwest of Zurich. The Reuss runs through the municipality. Of its area of around five square kilometres, just over half is used for agriculture, while about a fifth is forested. Despite its industrialisation, the village has retained its rural character. There are several options for planning your trip: the riverside landscape, special habitats, technological history and the winter custom of Spräggelen.

Landscape and the Reuss Riverside Path

The flat to gently rolling landscape is ideal for walks and bike rides. The Reuss Riverside Path is a one-way route from Ottenbach to Rottenschwil. It is six kilometres long, with a stated ascent of 10 metres, descent of 40 metres and duration of one hour and 25 minutes. When planning your time, bear in mind that these figures describe a route in one direction. The path begins at the cantonal border between Aargau and Zurich near Ottenbach and follows a raised embankment along the Reuss to Rottenschwil. Small marshy areas along the way offer a chance to discover lush plants and, with a little luck, wildlife. As temporary diversions or closures may occur, check the latest conditions before setting out.

Amphibians and Habitats

A special natural feature is the Mülibach gravel pit in Ottenbach. It has purpose-built shallow ponds inhabited by many amphibians. The area is a nationally important amphibian breeding site. Habitat conditions and the species present may vary depending on the season. The gravel pit’s clay-rich, steep slopes are also home to a colony of Sand Martins (Riparia riparia); this wildlife-watching opportunity may also change over time. The marshy areas along the Reuss Riverside Path offer another reason to look out for plants and possible wildlife sightings, although sightings cannot be planned.

Textile History and Technical Monuments

The village’s history goes back a long way: Ottenbach has been recorded as “Hotumbacharia” since 831 and in the form “Arnoldus de Ottonbac” since 1169. From the late 18th century, the village developed economically through domestic spinning and weaving. In 1784, almost half the population worked in cotton spinning; by the early 19th century, there were around 350 handlooms. Later, the Mechanical Silk Weaving Mill Zurich employed more than 200 people from Ottenbach and the surrounding area. This development forms an important part of the village’s history today.

The small power plant also tells the story of technological progress. The association operates the entire historic Ottenbach small power plant complex and offers demonstrations to the public. The original power station building is regularly put into operation and illustrates the state of mechanical and electrical engineering around 1920. Check the visiting arrangements before your visit. At the southwestern edge of the municipality there is also a 200-metre-long historic weir, the longest of its kind in the canton of Zurich. The weir, which runs parallel to the river, diverted water to generate energy and is part of the small power plant belonging to the former A. F. Haas & Co. silk weaving mill.

Spräggelen in December

Spräggelen is an ancient folk custom that comes to life in Ottenbach as winter approaches. Today, it brings young and old together for social gatherings. The main Spräggele takes place on the second Friday in December and has been accompanied by a Christmas market since the late 1980s. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the current annual programme and event date.
