The river bathing area, Rheinwiese recreation area, riverside paths and URh shipyard bring together swimming, outdoor activities and maritime history. The traditional Hilari festival adds another dimension. You can tailor your stay to suit different interests: time by the river, a shipyard tour or a glimpse of village life each offer their own highlights.

The Rhine, swimming and trails

Langwiesen river bathing area is a public beach on the Rhine near Schaffhausen. It has a beach volleyball court and shady spots beneath the trees. The Rheinwiese recreation area has a lawn for sunbathing and playing, various play attractions and a paddling pool for small children. The facilities offer different options: the river bathing area has volleyball and shade, while Rheinwiese combines swimming areas with play facilities and a paddling pool.

The Rheinwiese recreation area can be reached via the main road between Feuerthalen and Langwiesen. It is a ten-minute walk from the “Langwiesen” or “Feuerthalen” stops. The site also has a kiosk and a public barbecue area for visitors.

Walking routes are also clearly described. The left-bank Rhine Trail runs from Langwiesen to Tössegg. In Langwiesen, the “From Paradies to Weinland” hiking trail leads directly to the Rhine; beyond Altparadies, it passes beneath the main road and over the railway line to the edge of the forest. These routes have different landmarks: Tössegg is the destination of the Rhine Trail, while the second route passes the Rhine and later the edge of the forest.

The shipyard and local history

The Langwiesen shipyard combines a long history with a visitor experience today. It moved into its new shipyard in Langwiesen in 1870. Several important “URh” vessels were built there; since 1965, the shipyard has been responsible for maintaining the shipping company’s vessels. A guided tour covers the history of the URh and the shipyard and includes all the buildings, including the slipway hall. It lasts about 1.5 hours. The history of Rheinwiese also goes back a long way: Rheinwiese beach opened before the Second World War, and a campsite was added later. The site was extensively renovated and expanded into a recreation area from 2016 to 2018. The campsite caters to both long-term residents and spontaneous visitors. Along with its sunbathing and play lawn, play attractions and paddling pool, it offers various ways to enjoy a stay at Rheinwiese.

Hilari and the history of Langwiesen

Every year, during the week of 13 January, Langwiesen celebrates Hilari together with Feuerthalen, Flurlingen and Uhwiesen. The tradition goes back more than 600 years; musicians accompany the joint celebrations throughout the Hilari season. Hilari customs in Langwiesen include Samichlaus figures visiting the village’s young people and the burning of a Böögg effigy. The village also has its own association: 20 young people from Langwiesen founded a Hilari association.

Other historical landmarks date back to the Middle Ages. The name “Lange wisa” was first recorded in a document relating to Langwiesen in August 876. The Reformed church of Feuerthalen and Langwiesen was first mentioned in 1390. Despite sharing a political municipality with Feuerthalen, Langwiesen has retained its distinct village character to this day. Alongside the shipyard’s history, visitors interested in the area’s past can also explore its connections to the church, village life and Hilari.
