Wetland landscape and nature centre

Around one third of the Neeracherried lies within the municipality of Höri. Located near Höri, the Neeracherried is one of Switzerland’s largest fens. The wetland landscape is of national importance; the fen itself is protected under federal law as a fen site and as a waterbird and migratory bird reserve. This designation makes the wetland a distinctive nature attraction for a stay in Höri.

Near Höri, you can discover birds, frogs, dragonflies and numerous plants from boardwalks and two observation huts at the BirdLife Neeracherried Nature Centre. The centre also offers special exhibitions and a permanent exhibition. Individual visits are possible; guided tours are available for groups by prior arrangement. The centre can be reached from Zurich by public transport in 30 minutes; from the signposted “Riedt bei Neerach, Riedacher” PostBus stop, it is a five-minute walk to the centre.

Trails, views and activities

The Glatt riverside trail is ideal for extended walks and cycling tours. The Höriberg offers a different perspective, with views across the Unterland, the airport and the mountains. The Höriberg is designated as a viewpoint of regional importance. The provider of llama trekking in Höri lists both summer and winter as bookable seasons and names the Höriberg as a destination. If you are planning to include a trek, check availability for your preferred date in advance.

Orchard heritage and nature conservation

The seven-hectare Höri high-stem orchard contains more than 300 trees and around 250 different fruit varieties. Since 2003, it has been recognised as a primary collection under the federal government’s National Action Plan (NAP). The orchard is also a nature conservation project: old trees and deadwood snags are left standing, and plant protection measures are used only to a very limited extent. Its range of varieties and the nature conservation measures described give the orchard a distinct focus alongside the wetlands and scenic views.

History and local events

Höri was first mentioned in a document in 1149 under its former name, “Hoerein”. The old school and community building, dating from 1827 and featuring a bell tower, is regarded as a landmark of the municipality. The original FRUCTUS orchard trail is also part of the town’s history: when it officially opened to the public in 2003, the route ran from Höri to Steinmaur; nine information boards were installed along the route at the time.
