Niederweningen offers several distinct points of interest for your stay: the Mammoth Museum with its original find and skeletal reconstruction, the “Time Trail” and the architectural history of the Reformed Church. The “To the Mammoths in the Wehntal” hike leads into the village and on to the museum; Sandhöli outdoor swimming pool adds a place to enjoy the water. This brings together culture, architecture, a walking route and water as distinct interests.

By train to the Mammoth Museum

From ZĂĽrich HB, take the S15 suburban train to Niederweningen Dorf; from there, it is a five-minute walk to the Mammoth Museum. From the terminus at Niederweningen, the walk takes about 15 minutes. These two walking times refer to different starting points, so use the stop specified for your journey when planning your visit.

Mammoth Museum and “Time Trail”

The Mammoth Museum displays the original find of the mammoth skeleton discovered in 2003, as well as the world’s only skeletal reconstruction of a newborn mammoth calf. This presents two distinct forms: an original find and the reconstructed skeleton of a young animal. The comparison draws attention both to the actual find and to the depiction of a newborn animal.

The “Time Trail” takes you beyond the mammoth. It leads from human settlement in historical times through the plants and animals of the Ice Age to the living creatures of the tropical Jurassic Sea. The sequence thus moves between human settlement, Ice Age nature and the tropical Jurassic Sea. These are distinct historical and natural subject areas, not just further aspects of the mammoth. If you are interested in natural history and the history of the Earth, you can explore them as a thematic progression.

Architectural history of the Reformed Church

Another architectural highlight is Niederweningen Reformed Church. Built in 1671, it is a Baroque preaching hall incorporating a Romanesque chancel tower. The year 1671 refers to the Baroque preaching hall, while the chancel tower is Romanesque. This makes it possible to distinguish two different architectural elements within the same church building. For architecture enthusiasts, this combination offers a different perspective from the finds and reconstruction at the Mammoth Museum.

Hike and Sandhöli outdoor swimming pool

The “To the Mammoths in the Wehntal” hike is another way to combine a museum visit with a walk. It descends into the village of Niederweningen and continues to the Mammoth Museum. One version of the hike reaches the Sandhöhli Niederweningen fire pit after a further 20-minute walk. This time refers to the additional walk to the fire pit, not to the entire route. As trail conditions may vary, check the route before setting out.

Sandhöli outdoor swimming pool offers something different: it has a paddling pool with fountains and a small water mushroom. This water-based offering has a different focus from the museum, church and hike. If you plan to visit the facility, check its status beforehand.
