Regensberg is a municipality in the Canton of Zurich and belongs to the Dielsdorf district. The medieval town sits high above Dielsdorf on a rocky spur of the Lägern; numerous half-timbered houses define its historic character. For planning your trip, local history and architecture go hand in hand with views from the castle tower and trails in the surrounding area.

A town with medieval origins

Regensberg was founded in 1244 by Baron Lütold V of Regensberg; at the time, the town was also called Neu-Regensberg. Its historic architecture includes the upper castle, with its oval ground plan, which is associated with architectural influences from Savoy. Half-timbered houses and the castle complex offer different architectural features that you can explore as you make your way around town.

A plan from 1751 shows Regensberg with a Baroque fortification dating from the 17th century. The church was originally built as a wooden chapel between 1244 and 1248, at the same time as the town. The stained-glass artist Louis Herion created its choir window, “The Cleansing of the Temple,” in 1911 during exterior renovation work. The architectural and artistic features mentioned here thus span the town’s founding in the 13th century, the fortifications and the 1911 renovation.

Guided town tours and historic rooms

In Regensberg, guided town tours are offered that last about an hour, as well as a more in-depth option lasting an hour and a half. The tour introduces visitors to the medieval water supply system and offers a look into Switzerland’s deepest draw well. Historic rooms in the Amtshaus (administrative building) are also part of the tour; these rooms are not open to the public. Check the latest tour details before your visit, as arrangements may change.

The two tour options provide a useful guide for planning your day: the shorter tour lasts about an hour, and the more in-depth one lasts an hour and a half. They focus on the water supply and the town’s history; access to the historic Amtshaus rooms is part of the guided tour and is not a self-guided visit open to the public.

Castle tower and views

The 13th-century castle tower houses a small exhibition, whose contents may change. The only way up is via a steep staircase with many steps. From the tower, you can see across the Wehntal valley and the Lägern ridge. Take the many steps into account when planning your visit, and check the current visiting conditions in advance.

Walks and the Planet Trail in the surrounding area

Near Regensberg, the start of the Lägern Planet Trail offers a view of the medieval-looking town. The trail represents the Solar System from the Sun to the dwarf planet Pluto at a scale of 1:1 billion. Detailed information panels explain, among other things, orbital velocity, distance from the Sun, surface temperature and the actual dimensions of celestial bodies. The trail combines views of Regensberg with an engaging topic to explore along the way.

Walks and hikes offer different experiences, too. The walk from Dielsdorf to Boppelsen climbs a short, steep slope before continuing through hedges and vineyards to Regensberg. Another hike, lasting just under two hours, starts in Regensberg and heads downhill, passing a sculpture park and continuing to the stork settlement in Steinmaur. For this hike, the starting point, approximate duration and a stop along the way are specified; for the walk, the short, steep climb is a particularly useful detail to know.
