Aesch ZH is a political municipality in the Dietikon district of the Canton of Zurich. The town was formerly called Aesch bei Birmensdorf. Its natural surroundings, the AescherMärt held twice a year, and historical traces in several areas give a stay different focuses: outdoor activities, a market visit or exploring local history.

Walks and landscapes

The natural surroundings invite you to enjoy leisurely walks, cycle rides and time outdoors. The bench trails form a local network for walks in and around Aesch. They offer shorter and longer routes, with benches along the way for a breather. The benches make breaks part of the walk, while the variety of route lengths leaves room for planning. Four circular routes of different lengths lead through the landscape around the municipality. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the Reppischtal, the vineyards and the surrounding forests. When planning, the circular routes give you two concrete points of reference: their length and the scenery you would like to see along the way.

The AescherMärt

The AescherMärt takes place twice a year. It offers fresh food from the surrounding area and beyond, as well as arts and crafts from the municipality and the region. Music, attractions for children, flea market stalls, presentations by local clubs and school projects round out the market. This brings together the products on offer and the programme. If you plan to include the Märt in your trip, check the dates in advance.

Traces of local history

Aesch is first mentioned in an imperial charter dated 28 December 1124. Celtic graves have been documented in the Burst area. Old documents and maps record a chapel and a cemetery at Heligenmatt; a Roman settlement already existed in the Chalofen area. The dated mention and the traces at Burst, Heligenmatt and Chalofen offer different ways to explore local history: through a specific date, archaeological finds and historical connections to particular places.

Farm shop and seasonal products

The local offering also includes the Suters Hofmärt farm shop at Lielistrasse 4 in Aesch. It sells seasonal fruit and homemade products. The selection includes apples, pears, beef, jam, apple chips, vegetables, raspberries, plums, cherries and mini kiwis. So the selection is not limited to fruit; it also includes vegetables, meat and processed products. The seasonal range may vary. If you are looking for a particular product, check what is currently available before your visit.

Planning your stay

When choosing a destination, you can consider Aesch in terms of the focus of your stay: walking paths and cycle rides mean time outdoors, the AescherMärt offers a visit on specific dates, and the local history spans several named areas. If you are planning a trip that combines a market visit with time outdoors, the planning considerations differ: for the Märt, the event dates matter; for the circular routes, consider their length and views. The bench trails let you choose between shorter and longer walks, with benches for breaks.
