Bäretswil brings together a range of experiences for a stay in the Zurich Oberland: textile and industrial history, a historic railway connection, and hikes to nearby peaks and Täuferhöhle cave. If you are looking for a hotel in Bäretswil, you can choose what to focus on according to your interests—technical processes, architectural history or outdoor activities.

Location and landscape

Bäretswil lies on the northwestern edge of the Allmens, on a saddle between the Glatt and Töss valleys in the Zurich Oberland. The municipality ranges from 616 m to 1,077 m above sea level; the town’s railway station is at 696 m. 872 hectares, or 39 percent of Bäretswil’s area, are forested. The elevations and forest cover put the municipality’s landscape into perspective; the hilly surroundings are well suited to long hikes and bike rides.

Textile and industrial history

The Neuthal Museum of Textile and Industrial Culture explores industrialisation and the history of the textile industry in the Zurich Oberland. Water power, spinning, weaving and embroidery are its main themes. With working historic machinery, you can experience the complete production process for a piece of fabric. The exhibits lead from the use of water power to various textile processes, giving the visit a clear thematic thread.

The Stockrüti waterwheel sawmill presents a different technical focus. Visitors can watch the entire power transmission process in action, from the waterwheel through cogwheels and leather belts. The sawmill is the last waterwheel-powered sawmill in the Zurich Oberland. Unlike the textile museum, it focuses on the transmission of mechanical power rather than the production of a piece of fabric.

The Zurich Oberland Steam Railway (DVZO) is also part of the historic railway connection from Bauma in the Töss Valley via Bäretswil to Hinwil. The DVZO’s museum trains have run along the route since 1978. This adds another aspect to the history of textile production and mechanical power transmission: the historic railway connection between the places named above.

Church and architectural history

The Reformed church and churchyard are listed in the Canton of Zurich’s 2022 inventory of heritage sites of significance beyond the municipal level. The building’s history spans markedly different periods: the church was demolished and rebuilt in 1826–1827, while the tower dating from 1502–1504 was preserved. The rebuilt church and the older tower therefore do not share the same construction date—a significant distinction when dating the structure.

Hikes and other activities

The Guyer-Zeller hiking trails form a 25 km network of public paths to the nearby peaks of Gryffenberg, Hohenegg and Stoffel. Named after Guyer-Zeller, the trails lead to his factory in Neuthal. For a single hike, the “Pässe: Ghöch” route starts at Bärenplatz in Bäretswil; it covers 10.0 km and takes about three hours on foot. The network of paths with several peak destinations and the individual hike with its stated distance and approximate duration offer different levels of planning detail. The route description for “Pässe: Ghöch” was revised in 2019. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The hike to Täuferhöhle cave starts at Bäretswil railway station, formerly a station on the Uerikon–Bauma railway. The path follows narrow trails and steps. The cave got its present name from Anabaptists who hid there from the authorities during the Reformation. Here, the specific character of the route meets a chapter of Reformation history.

The season can also play a part in choosing your activities.
