Grüningen is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Zurich and belongs to the Hinwil district. Several themes can help you plan your trip: the historic old town and castle, the Beekeeping Museum, the Botanical Garden and the Grüningen Children’s Trail. If you are planning an overnight stay, you can shape your visit around local history, an interest in gardens or a family outing.

Castle and historic townscape

Grüningen Castle is considered Grüningen’s landmark and occupies a prominent place in the old town. From 1408 to 1798, the castle was the seat and residence of the bailiffs appointed by Zurich’s Grand Council. Its history is therefore closely linked to Zurich’s former administration; at the same time, it is a striking focal point that shapes the town’s historic identity.

The old town has held town privileges since the Middle Ages. Baroque archways are among the features of its historic townscape. With its fine-grained, small-scale layout, the town is considered a prime example of the urban design of former small towns. The contrast between political development and the townscape offers two different ways to explore its history: dated periods of rule on the one hand, and architectural layout on the other.

The history of the coat of arms and of local rule can also be dated: Grüningen was under Austrian rule from 1274 to 1408, and the lion in the coat of arms is first documented on a seal from 1370. The seal dates from this period. The year 1408 also marks the beginning of the period when the castle served as the seat and residence of the bailiffs.

Beekeeping Museum and Botanical Garden

The Beekeeping Museum in Grüningen displays a collection of exhibits about beekeeping. If you are interested in keeping bees, it offers a distinct focus alongside the history of the town and its architecture. Tours are available by arrangement; if you are visiting as a group, confirm the date in advance.

With its large trees, the Grüningen Botanical Garden has the character of an arboretum and includes many trees and shrubs. Unlike the historic townscape, the garden focuses on trees and plants. Public tours take place on the first Sunday of each month; topics include rhododendrons, pines and peat. As the programme varies by season, check the current dates before your trip.

Children’s trail, market and getting there

The Grüningen Children’s Trail takes families to Herrenbaumgarten, Stedtlipark, Schlosswisenweiher and Müli, and is freely accessible at all times. In the event of special events or construction work, check the current situation before your visit; if you want to visit specific stops, consult the current route.

If you are planning your visit in autumn, the Landvogteimarkt may also be of interest: it is held on the second weekend of October each year. Check the exact event dates before your trip.

To reach the old town, take the S-Bahn to Wetzikon and then the bus to the “Grüningen, Stedtli” stop. Check the current ZVV timetable before your trip.
