Discover Wernetshausen on the Bachtel
Accommodation in Wernetshausen
Wernetshausen lies halfway up the Bachtel, the local mountain of the Zurich Oberland. The village offers visitors a range of options for planning a trip: trails up the Bachtel, individual attractions, historic sites and seasonal activities. Cultural offerings are also part of the village’s character. Which ones you include depends on whether you want to focus on a hike, landscape-related topics or culture.
Trails up the Bachtel and circular hike
The most direct ascent from Wernetshausen to the Bachtel takes 45 to 60 minutes and is about 5.6 kilometres long. One themed option is the geology trail on the Bachtel. It starts, among other places, at Wernetshausen School and passes nine informative panels on the way to Bachtel Kulm. The panels explain how the landscape of the Zurich Oberland was formed. When planning your route, you can therefore include this focus as well as the ascent itself.
Another option is the Hinwil–Wernetshausen–Hinwil circular hike. It is 8.1 kilometres long, takes about three hours, is rated difficulty level T1 and is listed as suitable from March to November. Comparing the times can help with planning your day: the most direct ascent takes 45 to 60 minutes, while the circular hike takes about three hours. The distance, difficulty level and season apply to this circular route.
Glacial erratic, Bachtel fissure and the ruins of Bernegg Castle
The glacial erratic can be reached in about 20 minutes from the Wernetshausen Dorf bus stop. As a boulder deposited by a glacier, it served as a pilgrimage destination. The Bachtel fissure is easy to find thanks to a yellow hiking sign and arrows. It was formed during the violent thunderstorm of 25 August 1939. These two destinations each offer a different point of interest: the glacial erratic is notable for its composition and former function, while the Bachtel fissure is notable for its precisely dated formation.
Bernegg Castle was built in the 13th century as a clearing castle and is under the protection of the Swiss Confederation. Its date of construction and historical function give a visit a clear connection to the past. Together with the geology trail, it offers a different way to experience the Zurich Oberland than a tour focused mainly on the route and its duration.
Seasonal activities
The Bachtel Bike Trail is steep and very technically demanding. Check the trail conditions and whether riding is permitted before setting out. The cross-country ski trail starts and ends at Wernetshausen School; it operates when snow conditions are favourable. For sledging, only the Orn–Wernetshausen route is an official sledge run. It can be used only when there is enough snow and it is officially open. These activities have different requirements: for the bike trail, check the trail conditions and permissions; for the ski trail and sledge run, the main considerations are snow and whether they are operating.
Culture and local offerings
The Looren OpenAir association organises an annual three-day open-air festival on a cow pasture at Looren farm in Wernetshausen. As well as music, the programme includes other art forms. The format and programme may vary from one edition to the next, so plan your trip around the dates and content of the edition you intend to attend.
Visitors from Wernetshausen and the surrounding region can use the Looren Library in person by calling in advance, Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Check the access arrangements again before your visit. This makes it easy to plan around the library’s opening hours, while the OpenAir depends on the dates of the relevant edition.
