Wolfhausen ZH is a district of the municipality of Bubikon in the canton of Zurich. There are several different points of interest to consider when planning a stay: the village market, the history of the Uerikon–Bauma railway and walking routes in the municipality. Lake Egelsee is also part of the wider Bubikon area, rather than the Wolfhausen district itself. You can plan your trip around whether you want to focus on village life, local history or nature.

Spring village market

The Wolfhausen village market takes place every spring on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, in Kaffigasse and along the old Herschärenstrasse. The next market is scheduled for 8 May 2027. Around 40 market stalls and a children’s flea market are part of the event. If you are combining a visit with a stay, you can use the date as a specific reason for your trip and plan your travel dates accordingly. Having been held since 1983, the market is a recurring part of village life, not just a one-off event. Its different elements—the market stalls and children’s flea market—give the occasion a clear connection to local life.

Railway and industrial history

A preserved railway track connects Bubikon station to the junction with Oberwolfhauserstrasse in Wolfhausen. It is the last remaining section of the former main line of the Uerikon–Bauma railway, which operated from 1901 to 1948. Together with the station building in Wolfhausen, it has been preserved as a single site. The construction of the railway spurred Wolfhausen’s industrial growth; large factory buildings have shaped the village’s appearance ever since. The Wolfhausen galvanizing plant is one of the historic reminders of this industrial past. The railway track and industrial history are thus directly connected: one points to the former railway line, while the other reflects the development associated with its construction.

Other historical landmarks can be found in different parts of the village. The yellow Art Nouveau schoolhouse on Fosberg was inaugurated in 1912. A bronze wolf by Swiss artist Rudolf Wening stands by the Volg store. These three examples—the railway relic, schoolhouse and sculpture—show different facets of local history, without necessarily forming a single walking route or shared itinerary. Those interested in architectural history will find a different point of interest here than visitors who want to focus on the village market or walking routes in the municipality.

Walking routes and nature in the municipality

A signposted local walking route leads from the Wolfhausen post office via Fosberg schoolhouse, Geissbergweg, Geissbergholz and Widerzell to Lake Egelsee. The intermunicipal O10 hiking trail is a separate route: it crosses the municipality of Bubikon along the Oberwolfhausen–Ritterhaus–Hasenstrick–Bachtel route and is marked with yellow signs. The local walking route is marked with white signs.

Lake Egelsee is in the municipality of Bubikon and is a moorland lake surrounded by protected areas. The nature trail begins at the lake and runs in a wide loop around the adjacent nature reserve. Eight information panels explain the area’s flora and fauna, the relationship between agriculture and nature conservation, and the area’s former uses and origins. The trail therefore focuses not only on the landscape, but also on its use and development. The lake and nature trail add a distinct nature and educational focus to the walking routes in the municipality.

More things to do in Bubikon

The municipality of Bubikon is also home to a challenging 9-hole golf course with water hazards and bunkers. In suitable playing conditions, it offers views of the Alps and Bachtel. These features provide a different focus from visiting the market, exploring local history or walking the trails. When choosing a hotel in Wolfhausen, you can first consider which of these aspects matters most for your stay. When searching, check the exact location of each option and coordinate any planned market visit with the event date. This will keep your choice focused on your own reason for travelling, without treating the different destinations in Wolfhausen and the municipality of Bubikon as one and the same.
