Fehraltorf is a political municipality in the Pfäffikon district of the Zurich Oberland in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland. The town brings together several themes you can prioritize in different ways when planning your trip: local history, archaeological traces, the glacial landscape and Speck-Fehraltorf airfield. This lets you tailor your stay to a specific interest.

Lake Pfäffikon and the drumlin landscape

Lake Pfäffikon lies partly within the municipality of Fehraltorf and is part of the drumlin landscape created by the Linth-Rhine Glacier in the Zurich Oberland. In terms of thematic orientation, this connection offers a different focus from the village’s historical sites: here, the emphasis is on how the landscape was formed and shaped by glaciation.

A striking motif illustrating this is a horse statue in front of an abstract drumlin. It stands at a traffic roundabout at the entrance to the town, on Kempttalstrasse near the turnoff for Russikon. The statue symbolizes Fehraltorf’s ties to agriculture, equestrian sports and glacial landscape formation.

The “Ziit-Spuure” cultural trail

The “Ziit-Spuure” cultural trail runs through Fehraltorf and presents historical information at 53 locations spread throughout the village. The trail therefore offers many points of interest, while the “Dorfkern” (Village Center) walk refers to a specific route with its own stated length: approximately 1,500 meters. When comparing these two details, distinguish the network of locations from the length of this particular walk.

One of the named sites is the “Roman estate in Speck,” listed as stop 39 on the cultural trail. The name gives the walk a specific archaeological connection and complements the broader local history with a particular theme.

Archaeological traces and local history

The archaeological finds date back to different periods. In the 530s, Fehraltorf became part of the Merovingian Empire along with northern Switzerland. Grave goods from 57 graves uncovered in 2015 bear witness to this. Settlement remains from the Late Bronze Age point to a much earlier period: they were found in the Burgwis-Sackholz area southwest of the hillfort at Rüti. The hill is surrounded by three oval ramparts.

The hillfort at Rüti can be climbed from the side of the pistol shooting range. Check local conditions before your visit. Another archaeological story concerns Lochweid: at least three burial mounds in a wooded area were excavated or removed between 1887 and 1897. Several richly furnished cremation and inhumation graves were uncovered. These finds complement the settlement remains at Rüti with a different type of archaeological evidence.

Getting there and the airfield

Fehraltorf railway station has been connected to the Swiss rail network since May 3, 1876. The Effretikon–Hinwil railway line opened that day. The station is served by S-Bahn line S3; line S19 also runs during peak hours, and SN8 operates on weekends as part of the ZVV night network. If you are planning a specific connection, check the timetable and take into account the stated operating times of the additional lines.

Speck-Fehraltorf airfield lies between Fehraltorf and Lake Pfäffikon. It is operated by the Zurich Oberland Flight Sports Group (FGZO), which recommends it as a place to visit. Private passenger flights are offered. Before traveling, check flight availability and the current conditions for visiting.

Choosing a clear focus gives your subsequent search for a hotel in Fehraltorf a specific direction.
