Rickenbach: Rural Character and Local History
Accommodation in Rickenbach
Rickenbach is a municipality in the Winterthur District in the Canton of Zurich. Around 58.8 percent of its area is used for agriculture; historically, arable farming and viticulture shaped the municipality. Its rural village character and natural surroundings define its appearance. If you are planning a stay, you can get to know the place from different angles: local history, outdoor trails, and seasonal activities.
Regionally, Rickenbach is connected via the Rickenbach-Attikon and Winterthur railway stations, regional bus routes, and the nearby A1 motorway. Connections run towards Zurich, Winterthur, and Thurgau. For your journey, it is worth checking the best connection and the timetables for your travel dates.
Local History and Architectural Heritage
Rickenbach has a history stretching back more than a thousand years; its first documented mention dates from 820. Bronze Age flat graves and Iron Age burial mounds bear witness to early settlement. Oberholz is listed in Category B of the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property Protection as a burial mound site dating from the Bronze Age to the Hallstatt period.
The Hanseli granary dates from 1677 and is now known as the Hanselispycher Local Museum. The local museum is listed as a Category B object in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property Protection. In Rickenbach, early traces of settlement thus stand alongside a building from more recent local history.
The Reformed Church was first mentioned in 1275. Its larger nave was built in 1695; five stained-glass windows were created by Jacques Schedler in 1966 and 1978. These details bring together several historical periods in one building, from its first mention to the later windows.
St. Joseph’s Church in Sulz also offers a distinctive connection to art and architectural history. It was built between 1957 and 1958 and consecrated on 18 May 1958. Stained-glass windows by Jacques Schedler depict the Stations of the Cross and the Resurrection of Christ; the church also has carved Stations of the Cross by Karl Ruff.
Hiking, Cycling, and Nature
The “Hiking and Solving Riddles” excursion is an easy family hike from Seuzach to Rickenbach. It crosses fields and passes a fire pit before reaching Rickenbach-Attikon railway station. Take Thurbo line S29 to Seuzach to reach the hike, and return on line S30. Check the current timetable before setting out. Facilities and trail conditions can change, so it is also a good idea to check local conditions.
The existing route between Rickenbach and Rickenbach Sulz has a cycle path on both sides along the road outside the built-up area, on Hauptstrasse and Stationsstrasse. As infrastructure can change due to construction work, it is advisable to check the situation locally before setting off.
A beaver dam lies on the Schwarzbach in an area with natural river morphology. This nature description dates from 2025; local river conditions can change. The description fits Rickenbach’s natural character, but does not imply that the watercourse will remain unchanged.
Seasonal Activities and Visiting Times
The Rickenbach Marble Run Trail was built by schoolchildren, residents, and businesses from Rickenbach, Sulz, and the surrounding area. It has 17 stations. In 2026, the trail was open until the end of October; check the seasonal information if you are visiting in another year. The first track is right outside Volg Sulz. This landmark may change if the setup on site is altered.
“vo puur zu puur” takes place every September as an open farm day in the Canton of Zurich. Activities include farm tours and free shuttle buses between participating farms. At the 2026 event, Mäck Luing offered an informative farm tour with a visit to its herd of suckler cows. If you are travelling at a later date, check the event dates and the programme for that year.
Grafenwisen outdoor swimming pool also has clearly specified seasonal dates: in 2026, its season ran from 2 May to 13 September. If you are planning a visit for another year, check the dates again. This helps distinguish year-round cultural and historical attractions from activities available only during specific periods when choosing when to visit.
