Bay Minette combines municipal sports facilities and parks with historical sites. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, the specific differences can help you plan your trip: the Bay Minette Municipal Pool Complex centers on pools and courts, while the USCT Heritage Trail explores the history of the Siege of Fort Blakeley. Parks add baseball, disc golf, and picnic tables to the mix. You can tailor your stay to interests such as sports, outdoor activities, and history.

Sports and Parks in Bay Minette

The Bay Minette Municipal Pool Complex has two pools, several slides, and a diving board. The facility also includes several tennis and basketball courts. The smaller of the two pools has a zero-depth entry and is wheelchair accessible. This feature applies to the smaller pool.

The Eddie Hartner Tennis Complex has six lighted tennis courts. The sand volleyball courts are open to the public and can be rented through the Bay Minette Recreation Department. Tennis and sand volleyball can therefore be distinguished by different features: the number and lighting of the courts are specified for tennis, while public access and rental availability are specified for sand volleyball.

Halliday Park has several baseball fields, a small playground, and a covered pavilion. Bay Minette's skate park is on McMeans Avenue next to Halliday Park. This makes it easy to distinguish the locations: the baseball fields, playground, and pavilion are part of the park, while the skate park is next to it.

At Disc-Go Park, a nine-basket course covers both open areas and a wooded section. Blackburn Park has picnic tables for casual gatherings. This offers a choice of different outdoor activities: a disc golf course with varied surroundings, and a park whose picnic tables are intended for informal get-togethers.

Outdoor recreation extends beyond individual parks. The surrounding forests of Bay Minette, as well as the nearby Tensaw River Delta and the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, are additional settings for outdoor activities.

History and Architectural History

At 6955 Cloverleaf Landing Road in Bay Minette, the USCT Heritage Trail passes parts of three distinct earthen rampart lines, connecting approach trenches, and several Union artillery positions. These features are associated with the Siege of Fort Blakeley. The trail also highlights the role of African American troops in the battle, who were officially known at the time as United States Colored Troops.

The trail is open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you plan your visit around these hours, check the opening times again in advance.

The focus at First Baptist Church of Bay Minette is architectural history: it is the oldest surviving example of a church built of brick and stone in Baldwin County. By contrast, the USCT Heritage Trail focuses on the Siege of Fort Blakeley and the role of African American troops. Bay Minette thus offers two distinct historical perspectives side by side: a surviving church building and the sites of a battlefield.
