Heflin combines a trail leading to its historic downtown with water-based recreation and distinctive cultural sites. If you are planning a hotel stay, these different highlights can help with your trip planning: the Heflin Spur connects Cahulga Creek Park with the historic center, while the park also offers facilities for water activities and recreation. The historic courthouse and a mural at the city amphitheater offer a different focus from trails and the lake.

Trail and Historic Downtown

The Heflin Spur is a 3.5-mile extension of the Pinhoti National Recreation Trail. Its trailhead is at Heflin City Hall. From there, the trail passes through Cahulga Creek Park and continues to the historic center of Heflin; Rocky Creek Waterfall is one of the featured destinations along the spur.

The historic courthouse was built in 1906. The iHeartHeflin Amphitheater mural is at the city amphitheater, next to a large chalkboard for visitors and the community. The courthouse provides a specific historical reference point for the area’s architecture; the mural adds its own cultural touch at the amphitheater.

Waterfront and Outdoor Recreation

Cahulga Creek Park covers 176 acres and is located in Heflin. Its facilities include a Passport to Fitness Trail, a fishing pier, a picnic pavilion, an outdoor classroom, public restrooms, and a boat ramp. The park offers a range of options, from exercise and fishing to picnicking and water activities.

Boats without gasoline-powered motors are allowed on the lake for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and leisurely boating. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, keep the motor restriction in mind. A hiking trail also runs along Cahulga Creek Dam: the lake is on one side, and the spillway is on the other. From there, the trail climbs a mountain that borders the Talladega National Forest for one mile.

The Lake Point Disc Golf Course starts at Cahulga Creek Dam and has 20 holes. The Heflin Community Archery Park has target facilities for adults and youth, an elevated platform for hunting-style archery, and a course with ten targets. These facilities offer different activities: disc golf at the dam and archery with a variety of target options.

Programs, Wildlife Viewing, and Seasonal Activities

Heflin Parks and Recreation offers the Kayak Adventure Camp. If you want to plan your trip around a specific camp date, check the exact dates in advance. In summer, Northern Rough-winged Swallows can occasionally be spotted over the lake at Cahulga Creek Park.

Bennett Farms offers a hayride to a pumpkin patch; the pumpkins are grown from seeds planted entirely by hand. The farm also has a petting zoo, a hay-bale maze, and a corn pit. Check in advance whether these seasonal activities are available during your travel dates.
