Coffee County: History, Monuments, and Nature
Accommodation in Coffee County
Coffee County offers a range of reasons to visit: historic sites and collections in Elba and Enterprise, events in Enterprise, and nature and recreation destinations along the Pea River and at Coffee County State Public Fishing Lake. The Pea River flows from north to south through the middle of Coffee County.
Historic Sites and Collections
In downtown Elba, the Governor James E. (Big Jim) Folsom Birthplace is designated a historic landmark by the State of Alabama. At the Old Jail in Elba, you can explore the grounds and corridors. Elba Veterans Memorial Park is home to the first “Lest They Be Forgotten” monument in the United States; it is dedicated to Elba native Sergeant Jason D. Jordan.
The Boll Weevil Monument stands in the heart of downtown Enterprise. It was unveiled on December 11, 1919, and conveys a message of hope, perseverance, and resilience. This interpretation gives the monument a symbolic significance in addition to its firmly established place in the townscape.
Enterprise City Cemetery is the historic original cemetery of Enterprise. More than 40 Civil War soldiers, early pioneers, and local founders are buried there. The Wall of Freedom commemorates fallen soldiers from Coffee County, adding to the region’s range of memorials.
The Pea River Museum is located in the old Enterprise Railroad Depot. Built in 1903, the depot has served the society as a museum since 1974. Exhibits include historic clothing, farm equipment, furniture, and weapons. The collection thus ranges from everyday items to objects related to agriculture and history.
River, Lake, and Trails
The Pea River is suitable for floating and fishing from a small flat-bottomed boat or a canoe. Coffee County State Public Fishing Lake is an 80-acre lake stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, and crappie. Since fish populations and operations can change, check current conditions before going fishing.
The trails at Johnny Henderson Park in Enterprise offer opportunities for walking, running, hiking, and biking. LZ Disc Golf Course is located at Johnny Henderson Family Park, at 1901 Neil Metcalf Road, off Route 167N in Enterprise. If you plan to use the trails or course, check current information about conditions and facilities.
Events and Travel Planning
The World's Smallest St. Patrick's Day Parade has just one participant: the Grand Marshal. The Boll Weevil Fall Festival is an annual tradition in historic downtown Enterprise. The Piney Woods Arts Festival takes place every first weekend in April on the grounds of Enterprise State Community College. Check the dates and program for the year you plan to travel if you want to plan your stay around an event.
Enterprise Municipal Airport is just outside Enterprise, Alabama, in Coffee County. It is equipped for business and private flights. If you are considering this travel option, check the latest operational information.
Decide whether monuments and museums, an event date, or activities on the river and lake will shape your stay. This lets you tailor your choices to the places and dates that matter to your own travel plans.
