Atmore combines a history as Williams Station with cultural attractions and recreational opportunities; outdoor activities on the Perdido River add to the picture of the surrounding area. You can plan your trip around a range of interests: local history, Creek culture, river and forest landscapes, swimming, motorsports, and entertainment.

History and Culture

The first structure in what is now Atmore was a small supply shed for William Larkin Williams. In 1866, Williams Station was established as a logging community along the Mobile and Great Northern Railroad. The shed and the founding mark different historical points of reference: an early structure on the one hand, and a logging community connected to the railroad on the other.

The Atmore Heritage Park is home to historic buildings that have been relocated. It also features the Atmore Welcome Center, a splash pad, and playground equipment. The park brings historic buildings and practical recreational amenities together.

Downtown Atmore is among the newest National Register Districts in the United States. At the same time, it serves as a community gathering place for recreation, dining, shopping, working, and living. Atmore continues to honor its roots as Williams Station with Williams Station Day.

The Poarch Creek Indians Museum showcases early Muskogee Creek village life and traditional Creek art. Exhibits include stoneware, pottery, tools, baskets, textiles, shellwork, copperwork, and quilts. The collection highlights both objects from village life and traditional art forms. Guided tours with knowledgeable staff are available for visitors.

Nature and Landscape

The Perdido River begins in Escambia County, Alabama, about eight miles northwest of Atmore. Near Atmore, it is a blackwater river that flows through wooded swamps and wetlands. The river offers opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and drift fishing.

The Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve encompasses about 6,000 acres of woodland, twelve miles of waterfront along Big Escambia Creek, and numerous lakes. The nature-focused attractions offer different experiences: the Perdido River is known for its blackwater, wetlands, and river activities, while the reserve features woodland, creek frontage, and lakes.

Recreation

The municipal swimming pools at Tom Byrne Park and Houston Avery Park offer free swimming, lap swimming, swimming lessons, and private parties. The pools accommodate a range of uses, from casual swimming to lessons and private events.

Atmore Dragway is an eighth-mile racetrack that attracts motorsports fans from across the southeastern United States. Events include bracket racing and races for dragsters and motorcycles.

Wind Creek Casino offers poker, roulette, blackjack, and slot machines. Wind Creek Casino Hotel offers golf, laser tag, and movie theaters right near the hotel rooms. The recreational options have different focuses: the swimming pools offer swimming and lessons, the dragway focuses on racing, and the casino on games and slot machines.
