Jasper: Art, Museums and Parks
Accommodation in Jasper
Jasper, Alabama, offers downtown walks, art and several parks with short trails. When choosing a hotel, it may be important whether you are planning to visit museums and galleries or spend plenty of time outdoors. Check the actual location of an accommodation in relation to your chosen destinations.
A starting point downtown
The Jasper Welcome Center & Museum introduces visitors to the city’s people, places and events, and offers maps and local tips. From there, you can plan your visit with specific destinations in mind. The Mule Trail is a self-guided walk exploring the area’s cultural heritage; the Sculpture Trail connects artworks in the landscape. The Walker County Arts Alliance Art Gallery features changing exhibitions by local and regional artists. Check opening hours for a gallery or museum; an outdoor trail open to the public may require different planning. Trolley on Main offers historical group tours by reservation; without an appointment, this is not an activity you can simply do on the day.
House museums and events
The Bankhead House and Heritage Center was built in 1925 as the family home of William B. Bankhead. The Carl Elliott House Museum tells the story of the former congressman’s life and can be visited only by prior appointment. The annual Christmas Parade is listed for the first Tuesday in December downtown; you should confirm the details for the specific year as well. Choose a hotel for an event only after confirming its date.
Short walks in green spaces
Memorial Park has a one-mile walking trail and a pond. The one-mile Penn Woods Walking Track is paved and winds among the trees around the park pond. North Jasper Park Walking Trail is half a mile long and has benches, picnic tables and restrooms; it is described as wheelchair accessible. Gamble Park has a walking trail, a stream and renovated play equipment for children. These parks are not necessarily next to one another, and their amenities say nothing about a hotel’s accessibility.
Walker County Centennial Park also offers a walking trail, a pavilion, swings and a renovated soccer field. The parks do not all serve the same purpose: the paved Penn Woods Track may suit a short, level walk, while families may be looking for places to play. Check current conditions to see whether a particular trail is open during bad weather or an event. These are city amenities, not guaranteed features of an accommodation.
Choose a hotel to suit your day in the city
Compare a hotel’s actual address with downtown, the house museum you plan to book, or your chosen park. Check rooms, prices, availability and individual services with the property. General categories such as “small hotels” do not indicate what is currently available to book in Jasper.
