Bisbee brings together several distinct traces of its history: the former mining boomtown of Old Bisbee, preserved architectural and historical heritage, family stories, and places connected to mining and sports. If you’re looking for a hotel in Bisbee, this variety is a useful starting point: you can decide in advance whether the cityscape and family history, or mining, art, and sports, are of greater interest to you.

Old Bisbee: Streetscape and Architectural History

Bisbee’s architectural and historical heritage has been preserved. Old Bisbee is a former mining boomtown, defined by narrow streets and cobblestone paths. The main streets include areas with art galleries and blocks of buildings featuring 19th-century architecture. Individual shops may change. The streetscape, the area’s former boomtown character, and its architectural history each offer different insights into the neighborhood’s character.

The Bisbee Restoration Museum is located in the historic Fair Store Building in Old Bisbee. Martin Costello built the building in 1909 after a major fire destroyed the original building in downtown Bisbee. The museum houses a three-story collection of keepsakes, heirlooms, and textiles from Bisbee families. The building date and the collection tell different stories: the date anchors the history of a building, while the objects preserve the city’s family stories.

Mining History, from Exhibits to Landscape

The “Digging In: Bisbee’s Mineral Heritage” exhibit includes a mineral-rich underground mine and a crystal cave. In contrast to the family stories in the museum collection, it brings the area’s mineral heritage to the fore. Lavender Pit presents another side of mining history: it is a former 300-acre open-pit copper mine that operated from 1950 to 1974.

Along AZ-80 between Old Bisbee and the Lowell neighborhood, there is a viewpoint with parking, information panels, and a view of Lavender Pit. Check access conditions before your visit.

Art, Sports, and a City Distinction

The Bisbee Art Wall is an outdoor exhibition in an alley between 24 and 26 Brewery Avenue in the Gulch neighborhood of Old Bisbee. The works on display may change. The main streets include areas with art galleries; the Art Wall offers a different kind of outdoor art presentation.

Historic Warren Ballpark has been used as a sports venue since 1909. It covers about 40 acres and hosts numerous festivals and sporting events. The year 1909 also appears in the history of the Fair Store Building, where it marks the year it was built after the major fire; at the ballpark, it marks the start of its use as a sports venue.

DarkSky International has certified Bisbee as an “International Dark Sky Community.” This distinction adds another facet of the city to its historical, artistic, and sporting themes.
