Glendale: Ranch History, Desert Landscapes and Historic Downtown
Accommodation in Glendale
Glendale offers several distinct starting points for a hotel stay: historic ranch sites, a history walk, desert landscapes, a walkable Historic Downtown and tennis. The themes range from buildings and gardens to the city’s history and recreational activities in the nature preserve. If you’re looking for a hotel in Glendale, your interests in the area can provide a useful starting point for planning your trip.
Historic Sites and Images of the City’s Development
Historic Sahuaro Ranch covers 17 acres and combines historic buildings with a rose garden, an animal yard and orchards. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The ranch tradition includes two annual antique tractor shows: one in spring and another held alongside Sahuaro Ranch Days in November. If one of the shows is important for your travel dates, check the dates for that year’s event.
At Manistee Ranch Park, the City of Glendale has turned the former date palm grove at Manistee Ranch into a garden. Visitors can sit and meditate among the palms, some of which are more than 100 years old. The focus here is a garden, while Historic Sahuaro Ranch is characterized by historic buildings, an animal yard and orchards.
The Glendale History Walk features 59 images of Glendale’s history. They are embedded in the sidewalk along the promenade in the downtown retail area by the parking garage. The images trace the city’s development from desert to the Arizona Canal, ranches and railroads, and on to roads and the shipping of agricultural products.
Desert Landscapes and Activities at Thunderbird Conservation Park
Thunderbird Conservation Park is located in the Hedgpeth Hills and covers 1,185 acres. The nature preserve is dedicated to protecting and appreciating the desert environment. Recreational opportunities include picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, jogging and birdwatching. About 15 miles of multi-use trails have been built in the park. The park therefore brings together landscape and nature conservation with a variety of outdoor activities.
Explore Historic Downtown on Foot
Historic Downtown Glendale consists of two districts: Historic Catlin Court and Old Towne. The area spans ten blocks that are easy to explore on foot in an afternoon. In Historic Catlin Court, bungalows have been converted into specialty shops; white picket fences and mature shade trees define the streetscape. In Old Towne, brick-edged sidewalks and illuminated gas lanterns lead to ethnic restaurants and shops. The two districts therefore differ in their streetscapes and the shops and restaurants described.
Tennis as Another Highlight
Paseo Racquet Center has 19 tennis courts, a pro shop, lessons and holiday camps. Tennis is therefore a distinct option alongside Glendale’s historic and landscape-related themes.
