Yucca: Route 66, museums and cultural history
Accommodation in Yucca
Yucca can be approached as a travel destination through two main themes: the history of Route 66 and unusual museums and roadside attractions. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Yucca, this distinction can help with your planning: are you mainly interested in the road’s historic route, a museum’s distinctive architecture, or the remaining traces of former roadside stops? The places below differ considerably in their subject matter and historical context.
Route 66 and Yucca’s history
In 1953, Route 66 was rerouted through Yucca because traffic had become too heavy for the steep, winding road. Yucca lies along the 1950s route of Route 66 between Kingman and Topock. This location places the town within the route as it ran at the time and makes the route’s realignment a key historical reference point.
The Honolulu Club was also moved to Yucca when Route 66 was routed south through the town in the early 1950s. A description updated on July 8, 2025, reports that the Honolulu Club building and its signs are still standing. Check their condition before visiting.
The timelines differ: the realignment of Route 66 and the Honolulu Club’s move date to the early 1950s, while Area 66’s history goes back to the 1970s. The selection therefore brings together different historical perspectives: a specific change to the road and the history of a museum site.
Museums and unusual structures
A 2023 plan published by Mohave County describes the Alien Museum in the Yucca Community Area as the area’s largest tourist attraction. It describes the museum as being housed in a large building shaped like a golf ball. This unusual exterior is a distinctive part of the museum’s description.
Near Yucca is Area 66, a geodesic dome about 40 feet in diameter that houses a UFO and space museum. Area 66’s history goes back to the 1970s. The two destinations offer different highlights: the Alien Museum stands out for its golf-ball-like building, while Area 66 combines a dome, its approximate size, and a UFO and space theme. If you distinguish museums by their subject matter and architecture, this offers a concrete comparison for planning your trip.
Roadside history and directions
Coming from Kingman, you can reach Yucca’s Route 66 attractions via Exit 26 and the southbound frontage road. Check road conditions before driving.
A description updated on July 8, 2025, places the remains of the Old Gas Station on Yucca’s southwest side near W 12435 St. and mentions a pump island beneath a box-shaped canopy. It also describes Truck on a Pole at 12366 Frontage Rd.: a white Kenworth semi-truck atop a slender mast about 25 feet, or roughly 7.5 meters, high. The truck is what remains of a once-busy truck stop. Since physical conditions can change, check the condition of the remnants before visiting.
