Amado, Arizona: Whipple Observatory, Nature and Community Traditions
Accommodation in Amado
Amado is in Arizona’s Santa Cruz River Valley. The Whipple Observatory is also located in Amado. Nature, astronomy, and community traditions are distinct topics to consider when planning a stay.
Landscape and Nature in Amado
The landscape around Amado includes rugged peaks and pine forests in the Santa Rita Mountains. The surrounding ecosystems also include spring-fed canyons and extend into the Sonoran Desert. Amado offers opportunities for birdwatching and nature-based recreation. When planning, nature interests and astronomy can be considered as distinct focuses: here, the landscape and birds take center stage; there, astrophysics and telescopes.
Whipple Observatory and Astronomy
The Whipple Observatory is located in Amado, Arizona. The Whipple Science Center features astrophysics exhibits and also presents live science demonstrations. The exhibits may change. The observatory offers astrophotography experiences for small groups of one to five people. A guided hike to the VERITAS telescopes leads into restricted areas of the observatory and provides access to the platform of a VERITAS telescope. Check current ticket and availability information before planning, as both may change. The formats have different focuses: the Science Center combines exhibits with live demonstrations, while astrophotography is a group experience and the VERITAS hike is a guided tour that provides access to a restricted area.
Finding Your Way at the Observatory
Astronomy Vista is about 1.5 km along Mt. Hopkins Road; the parking lot is on the right. Follow the posted restrictions. At the base of the mountain, the Whipple Nature Walk Trailhead has the observatory’s only public restrooms; they are intended for cyclists, hikers, and amateur astronomers. The water at the trailhead is untreated; take this into account when planning. At Astronomy Vista, you’ll find the road directions and parking lot; the information about restrooms and untreated water, however, applies to the Whipple Nature Walk Trailhead.
Community Traditions and Garlic
The Amado Chili Cook-Off is an established community tradition. Individual event dates may change, so check a specific date before your trip. Forever Yong Farm produces garlic for planting and culinary use. Product availability is seasonal.
