Explore Batesville on the White River
Accommodation in Batesville
Batesville is located on the White River in north-central Arkansas. There are several options to choose from when planning your trip: trails and water activities, historic buildings and museums, and parks with events. If you’re looking for a hotel in Batesville, you can plan outings around your interests, focusing on time outdoors, local history, or specific event dates.
River, Trails, and Outdoor Recreation
The Batesville Greenway is a multi-use trail for running, walking, cycling, and other non-motorized activities. At the Lyon College Bluff Trail, the access points are more specific: there is an entrance for bicycles and hikers behind the Lyon Building, and a separate stairway entrance for hikers and runners. The trail is closed to visitors between dusk and dawn, so plan your visit during daylight hours.
Hobo Beach is on the Batesville side of the White River. It offers opportunities for bouldering and swimming. Conditions and visitor guidance can change, so check the latest information before planning these activities. The river is also a focus at Kennedy Park: the Mark House Memorial Boat Ramp and its pavilion provide access to the White River. Reservations may be required for the pavilion.
Poke Bayou flows through Batesville and empties into the White River. Fishing, kayaking, and canoeing are possible on the bayou. While Hobo Beach is associated with bouldering and swimming, other water activities are the focus at Poke Bayou. Riverside Park is also located on the White River, with playgrounds, walking paths, pavilions, and a large amphitheater.
The Batesville Community Center and Aquatics Park offers another recreational option. Its facilities include a 25,000-square-foot gymnasium, an indoor pool with multiple pools, two outdoor two-story water slides, and a 400-meter lazy river. Facility features and operations may change, so check current operating information before your visit.
Historic Buildings and Culture
The Batesville Commercial Historic District includes 52 buildings, most of them along Main Street between 4th and State. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The Garrott House offers another connection to local history: George Case had it built in 1842, and in 1971 it became the first structure in Batesville to be added to the National Register.
The Old Independence Regional Museum is housed in a former National Guard armory built in 1936 as a WPA project. Historical exhibits include “Where the Delta Meets the Ozarks” and “Region on the Move.” The exhibits may change. For a different take on art and entertainment, visit the Melba Theater, an Art Deco movie theater that also hosts concerts, presentations, private screenings, and benefit events.
At the Mark Martin Museum, you can see several of Mark Martin’s race cars as well as high-tech interpretive exhibits. Together, the museum and the Melba Theater complement the architectural history of the Historic District with insights into auto racing and cultural events.
Parks and Seasonal Events
Riverside Park is also the venue for the White River Water Carnival and the Fourth of July Celebration. In winter, Batesville becomes the “Christmas Capital of Arkansas.” At the 35-acre Riverside Park, visitors can enjoy millions of dancing lights, carriage rides, ice skating, a parade, a Ferris wheel, and free movies. Seasonal attractions and event programs may change from year to year, so check the dates and program details for your planned visit.
