Allenspark borders Rocky Mountain National Park and Roosevelt National Forest. In the Allenspark area, the Peak-to-Peak Scenic Byway follows State Highways 72 and 7. This places the area in context both through its location beside two protected areas and through a road route—two different reference points for a stay.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

Allenspark’s trail network is suited to hiking, biking and running. This puts a range of outdoor activities at the center of a visit, rather than limiting things to just one type of activity.

Two hikes can be compared by distance, difficulty and elevation gain. The Longs Peak Trail is a challenging 14.5-mile out-and-back hike with 5,100 feet of elevation gain. The hike to Calypso Cascades and Ouzel Falls is moderate, 5.4 miles long and has 930 feet of elevation gain. The two routes therefore differ considerably in length, rating and elevation gain. When comparing them, it’s best to consider all three figures in your planning rather than looking only at distance. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

Cross-country skiing also remains popular around Allenspark, particularly in Rock Creek and Wild Basin. Unlike when comparing hiking routes, conditions in a given winter are the main consideration here: they can vary from one winter to the next. If cross-country skiing is part of your travel plans, check conditions for your specific travel dates.

History and Culture

Allenspark’s history dates back to the Colorado Gold Rush of 1859. St. Catherine of Siena Chapel, also known as Chapel on the Rock, was built in 1935 and designated a historic site by Boulder County in 1999. Old Allenspark School is also a historic site designated by Boulder County.

The Old Gallery combines a renovated log cabin that has been part of Allenspark since the 1940s with a nonprofit role as a community, arts and visitor information center. Offerings include art exhibitions, concerts, classes and lectures, as well as special events and health and wellness activities. The program may change. If you’re interested in a particular type of event, check the current schedule.

An Option for a Break

Tahosa Coffee House at Camp St. Malo serves handcrafted drinks and light bites. If you’re planning a visit, check its current operating status before traveling. Along with the cultural and nature-related attractions, this adds to the range of things to consider when planning a stay in Allenspark.
