Jefferson: Nature, Trails, and History
Accommodation in Jefferson
When looking for hotels in Jefferson, it’s worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: hiking, nature watching, or regional history. The destinations vary in trail length, surface, elevation gain, and theme. These differences can help you plan your days out and connect your hotel search with your travel interests.
Hiking and Nature in Jefferson
Steep canyon walls and a fast-flowing creek shape the landscape at Clear Creek Canyon Park. The first sections of the Clear Creek Trail in the park include four miles of paved, ten-foot-wide trail directly alongside Clear Creek. Activities at the park include climbing, kayaking, and rafting. Water conditions and access to these activities can change; check the relevant conditions before planning your visit.
For a specific trail comparison: A challenging hike in Elk Meadow Park leads from the trailhead on Stagecoach Boulevard over 4.7 miles to 9,708-foot Bergen Peak, gaining 2,100 feet in elevation. The Castle Trail in Mount Falcon Park climbs more than 2,000 feet from the east. The Pioneer Trail connects Bergen Park and Evergreen Lake through Elk Meadow Park. The 1.7-mile Turkey Trot Trail is reserved exclusively for hikers and horseback riders; permitted uses can change.
Elk Meadow also offers a specific point of reference for wildlife watching: In the open-space system, the park is considered the place with the highest likelihood of seeing herds of elk. A sighting is not guaranteed.

These include a replica 1880s depot, changing exhibits, and an HO-scale model railroad. Dinosaur Ridge was designated a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service in 1973 and named a Colorado Natural Area by the State of Colorado.
