Bayfield offers several ways to shape your stay: river access and park trails, outdoor recreation, and local history and crafts. If you’re looking for a hotel in Bayfield, it can help to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. Local highlights range from trails through open landscapes to events and insights into early settlement.

River, Trails, and Parks

Little Pine River Park offers access to the Pine River. Its scenic trails pass through expansive open landscapes and lead to Bayfield’s old town center. This brings river access and trails toward the town center together in one park. If you enjoy walking during your stay, you can choose this spot for its connection between the landscape and the trail route.

Bald eagles are occasionally seen at Eagle Park, so a sighting cannot be guaranteed. The park also has horseshoe pits and river access for various outdoor activities. The parks offer different highlights: Little Pine River Park brings together trails through open landscapes, the old town center, and the river, while Eagle Park combines occasional eagle sightings, horseshoe pits, and river access.

Joe Stephenson Park is the largest park in Bayfield. Its amenities include a skate park, and it is also used for the Heritage Days Festival. This offers a different attraction from the trails and river access at the other two parks: here, a specific recreational facility and an event venue come together.

Heritage Days and Sheep Trailing

The Bayfield Sheep Trailing tradition began in 2000 through a collaboration between the Lasater family and the city. The annual Bayfield Heritage Days and Sheep Trailing event commemorates a special season for the region’s ranchers and celebrates the rural way of life on which Bayfield was built. If you’d like to plan your stay around the festival, check the event dates in advance.

Local History and Crafts

The Pine River Valley Heritage Museum is located in the Old Bayfield Town Hall. It offers insight into life during the early settlement of Bayfield and the surrounding areas. While Sheep Trailing focuses on the region’s rural way of life and ranchers, the museum focuses on early settlement. The festival and the museum therefore offer different historical themes to consider when planning your trip.

Crafts may also be of interest: at Pine River Pressworks, visitors can learn the basics of typesetting, inking, and printing, and explore bookbinding and wood type carving in greater depth. If you’re considering a class on these topics, check in advance which offerings are currently available.
