Hesperus combines mining and railroad history with the Old Fort and a winter sports profile. For your travel planning, you can consider historical local highlights and seasonal activities separately: the area's history dates back to the 19th century, while information about skiing applies depending on the season.

Old Fort and History

The former Fort Lewis military post in Hesperus was once a military fort and operated from 1892 to 1910 as a federal boarding school for Indigenous children located off reservation. The Old Fort later became the original site of Fort Lewis College. This sequence of events is among the area's defining historical chapters.

Today, the site has a variety of uses and ecosystems. These include ecological research, agriculture, ranching, and the preservation of historic sites. The Old Fort offers farmer training programs with hands-on instruction for aspiring farmers in dry mountain regions. Check program dates in advance.

Mining, Railroads, and School Construction

Hesperus began as a coal-mining town. The Hesperus Mine opened in 1892; some of the original structures still stand at the old Hesperus Mine. The arrival of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad in 1890 was significant for Hesperus. This historic narrow-gauge railroad ran from Durango to Hesperus.

Another reminder of the area's history is Hesperus School. Built in 1898 as a brick building with a bell tower, it is listed on the La Plata County Register of Historic Places. The Old Fort Country Store offers fresh, seasonally available vegetables, grass-fed beef, local pork, and a selection of locally made specialties.

Winter Sports Profile

The operator's profile lists 26 runs across 60 skiable hectares at Hesperus Ski Area, with 150 inches of annual snowfall. The operator describes the area as the largest night skiing area in the Southwest. According to the profile, the Big Horn double chairlift takes skiers and snowboarders to the 8,888-foot summit; the vertical drop is more than 700 feet.

The profile also lists snow tubing at Marmot Hill, ski and snowboard rentals, and ski lessons for all ages and ability levels. Hesperus Ski Area did not operate during the 2025/2026 season. For other dates, check current operating conditions and the availability of the listed offerings.

Hiking and the Regional Area

In the region around Hesperus, the Kennebec Trailhead is 0.5 miles past Hesperus on US Highway 160. The final two miles of the access road are rough and steep; a four-wheel-drive vehicle is strongly recommended. As road conditions and seasonal restrictions can change, check conditions before driving.

There are numerous hiking opportunities in La Plata Canyon along La Plata Canyon Road and Forest Road 561. Conditions on individual routes may vary. For additional regional context, Hesperus Mountain is the highest peak in the La Plata Mountains range; it is about 1 hour and 15 minutes north of Hesperus.

For your travel planning, you can first decide whether you are most interested in local history, hiking in the surrounding area, or winter sports. For ski and hiking plans, take operating conditions, road conditions, and route conditions into account for your travel dates.
