For a stay in Avon, nature and local history are two different themes to consider. They include the paved section of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, the Alsop Meadows nature area, Fisher Meadows Recreation Area, Pine Grove Schoolhouse, and the Avon History Museum. If you’re looking for a hotel in Avon, you can first consider whether trails and landscapes or historic schoolhouses interest you more. Each destination has a distinct focus and helps you explore Avon through specific themes.

Trails and Nature

The section of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail in Avon is a paved multi-use trail and part of the East Coast Greenway. Its paved surface is a clear distinction from the nature trails at Fisher Meadows Recreation Area. When choosing based on trail type, you can weigh whether a paved multi-use trail or nature trails better suit your interests.

Alsop Meadows is a 56.20-acre nature area with woodlands and open meadows along the Farmington River. Activities there include walking, hiking, jogging, and cross-country skiing; a canoe launch is also available. Compared with the paved trail section, this area offers several specific activities alongside its scenery. When choosing, you can weigh whether the paved trail surface or the variety of activities mentioned matters more to you.

Fisher Meadows Recreation Area has nature trails and is located along the Farmington River. The difference between the two areas is specific: Alsop Meadows covers 56.20 acres and combines woodlands and open meadows with several activities, while Fisher Meadows is characterized by its nature trails and riverside location. This lets you distinguish between the nature areas based on their described features.

The properties shown on Avon’s trail map are open to the public.

Historic Schoolhouses

Pine Grove Schoolhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the State Register of Historic Places. It is set up as an early 20th-century schoolhouse. Exhibits include school desks, slates, textbooks, and photographs; stories from former students are also part of the presentation. The combination of artifacts and personal accounts offers a material and biographical perspective on school history.

From summer through early fall 2026, Pine Grove Schoolhouse was seasonally open on Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.; it was closed on August 15 and 22, 2026. Check the date for your planned visit.

The Avon History Museum is housed in a fully renovated schoolhouse with a classroom dating to 1823. Alongside Pine Grove Schoolhouse, which is set up as an early 20th-century schoolhouse, it offers a comparison between two distinctly different periods in Avon’s school history.
