In Salisbury, you can shape your stay around your interests: trails and hikes, relaxation at Lake Wononscopomuc, architectural history, auto racing, or ski competitions. The trails differ in both length and use. Town Grove also has different swimming areas, while if you are traveling to a ski competition, the dates of that particular event matter.

Rail Trail and Hiking Trails

The Rail Trail, historically also called the Railroad Ramble, is a former railway line. It runs through the town of Salisbury from Lakeville Village beyond Salisbury Village, is over two miles long, and is owned by the town. The Rail Trail connects Community Field and Trotta Field and also links the business districts of Lakeville Village and Salisbury Village. These connections are intended for pedestrians and cyclists. Hikers can reach Salisbury Village on foot via the Rail Trail or Main Street.

A longer hiking route is the Appalachian Trail: 16.1 miles of it run through Salisbury. The route is frequently used for hiking, backpacking, and camping. Compared with the local Rail Trail, it differs both in length and in the activities mentioned. Mount Riga State Park lies within the town boundaries. It can be accessed via the Undermountain trailhead on Route 41; from there, the trail climbs about 1,700 feet to Bear Mountain.

Town Grove at Lake Wononscopomuc

Town Grove is located on Lake Wononscopomuc. The approximately 12-acre park is owned by the town of Salisbury. It offers various recreational facilities, opportunities for relaxation, and programs, and has a public boat launch. Visitors from neighboring towns also visit the park.

The swimming areas differ in their features: one area is suitable for toddlers, alongside a separate area with lanes for the summer swim team and a deeper swimming area with access to a raft. If swimming is part of your travel plans, check current conditions and seasonal availability before your visit.

Architecture, Auto Racing, and Winter Sports

The Salisbury Center Historic District includes institutional and commercial buildings that exemplify various 19th-century architectural styles. The range spans different building types and styles; for travelers interested in architectural history, this adds to the town’s trails and recreational opportunities.

Lime Rock Park’s racing history dates back to 1957, when the park began hosting auto races. It has hosted major American racing organizations, including the American Le Mans Series, IMSA, Grand-Am, NASCAR, SCCA, Trans Am, and World Challenge. The different organization names give motorsports enthusiasts several historical points of reference rather than limiting the history to a single organization.

Ski competitions are also part of the Salisbury Winter Sports Association’s recurring tradition. Every February, it hosts the Eastern Junior Ski Jumping Championships and, every five years, the Junior Nationals. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the current dates.
