Sharon: History, Theater, and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Sharon
Local history, theater, hiking trails, and seasonal activities offer different ways to plan a stay in Sharon. When looking for a hotel, you can shape your itinerary around whether you are more interested in history, a hike, a performance, or a seasonal experience. When planning, also note the different distance measurements and time frames: they vary by trail and activity.
Industrial History and Notable Buildings
The lime kiln in Sharon Valley commemorates Sharon’s industrial past. This prominent landmark was built from locally sourced marble and operated for about thirty years. Information panels stand at the kiln; its building material and operating period give the area’s industrial history a tangible local connection.
Built in 1775, the Sharon Historical Society & Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It features changing history exhibits, an art gallery, and an interactive history room where families can learn. Sharon’s stone clock tower was built in 1885–1886; it welcomes visitors from neighboring New York State and still displays the correct time.
Hikes with Different Distance Measurements
The letterboxing hike in the Sharon Mountain Block of the Housatonic State Forest runs partly on and partly alongside the Appalachian Trail within the town of Sharon. The total distance for the loop is listed as 1.5 miles. Because seasonal hazards on the trail should be taken into account, check conditions before setting out.
A recreational trail easement is located on Fairchild Road; the trail is marked, and a trail sign stands at the trailhead. Check access conditions before traveling there.
The recreational trail easement on Morey Road is listed as 1.2 miles each way. By contrast, the 1.5-mile distance given for the letterboxing hike refers to the entire loop. When comparing them, it matters whether the distance refers to one way or the complete loop.
Theater and Seasonal Experiences
TriArts Sharon Playhouse offers theater performances year-round. The Bok Gallery at Sharon Playhouse was built in 2003 and serves year-round as a center for rehearsals, performances, and new works.
One seasonal family activity is the ice skating program run by Sharon Parks and Recreation: it takes place every Sunday in January and February, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., at the Hotchkiss School’s Schmidt Rink. Seasonal details may change, so check the dates for the relevant winter before visiting.
Depending on the season, Ellsworth Hill Orchard and Berry Farm offers pick-your-own strawberries, raspberries, apples, and pumpkins. The harvest period determines which options are available during your visit; check the seasonal offerings in advance.
The activities differ in terms of travel planning: theater performances and the work of the Bok Gallery are offered year-round, ice skating is limited to January and February, and pick-your-own activities depend on the season. This allows you to match cultural offerings and seasonal activities to your travel dates.
