Putnam lies on the banks of the Quinebaug River. Several themes can shape your stay: a paved river trail, cultural venues, sculptures, a seasonal farmers market, and downtown attractions. There, you’ll find restaurants, retail stores, antique shops, and a theater. This lets you plan your trip around whether you prefer time outdoors, a visit to the market, or a cultural focus.

The Putnam River Trail

The 1.8-mile Putnam River Trail runs from the pedestrian bridge on Arch Street along the east bank of the Quinebaug River to Providence Street at Miller Park. There are five parking lots along Kennedy Drive. The trail is paved, suitable for walking and cycling, and easily accessible. Its length, two endpoints, and parking options provide clear guidance when you include the river trail in your travel plans.

StoryWalk® and Sculptures

A permanent StoryWalk® has been in place along the Putnam River Trail since 2015. It begins at the Riverview Marketplace Pavilion and ends approximately at the parking lot on Kennedy Drive.

Another artistic feature is the “Sculptures on the River” collection. It includes depictions of forest animals, abstract works, and imaginative sculptures, and was made possible by artist Dale Rogers. The variety of subjects offers a distinct connection to art alongside the town’s theater and museum venues.

Museum and Theater

The Gertrude Chandler Warner Boxcar Children Museum is devoted to the life and work of Gertrude Chandler Warner, author of the “The Boxcar Children” book series. It is located on a short section of track near the Putnam Railroad Station. This connects the museum site to a specific railroad landmark, while its exhibits focus on the author and her books.

With its theater facade, the Bradley Playhouse has shaped the downtown streetscape for more than 120 years. It is a former vaudeville theater where a local theater company stages a variety of plays. The Theatre of Northeastern Connecticut’s mission includes education and hands-on experience in the creation, direction, and production of theater and the performing arts. The organization produces and promotes theater and entertainment for the people of northeastern Connecticut and the surrounding areas.

Sawmill Pottery is a community working studio that offers classes and workshops for people of all ages and skill levels. This adds a hands-on, creative focus to the cultural venues and events. If you’re interested in pottery, you can include the studio as a distinct point of interest in your Putnam plans.

Events and a Stay with Your Dog
