Kingsland: Trains, Nature and History
Accommodation in Kingsland
When considering a stay in Kingsland, you can focus on history, train rides, nature or golf. The sites and attractions differ in their location: the memorial park is in the historic city center, Browntown Wilderness Park is west of the city, and Camden County offers nature trails. This lets you organize your choices by theme and location.
History and Memorial Sites
Kingsland is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the historic city center, Kingsland Veterans Memorial Park is located at the intersection of West King Avenue and South Orange Edwards Boulevard. Five memorial walls display detailed depictions of the various branches of the armed forces. Five illuminated service flags and the American flag in the center complete the site.
Another historical highlight is the Thiokol Memorial Museum. It honors the lives and legacy of more than 600 employees of the Woodbine Thiokol Chemical Plant. The museum also documents the plant’s history, including the events that led to the February 1971 explosion. The Royal District includes antique and fine art shops, as well as historic homes and buildings dating from the 1920s. These sites offer different points of focus: remembrance of the armed forces, industrial history and a historic district.
Train Rides with the Georgia Coastal Railway
Georgia Coastal Railway excursions depart from Kingsland Station. The station is two miles west of I-95 and Exit 3. The railway offers a variety of themed train rides and interactive shows throughout the year; themes and operating periods may change seasonally. It is therefore a good idea to check the schedule for your preferred date.
The rides include live entertainment and views of marshland, residential neighborhoods and an active rail yard in Georgia. Individual offerings may vary. When choosing a ride, you can therefore consider both its theme and the mix of entertainment and the scenery and railway views along the way.
Nature, Trails and Golf
Browntown Wilderness Park covers 4.03 acres west of Kingsland and offers a natural park landscape. Temple Landing Boat Ramp is right next door, providing easy access to the water. Conditions at the ramp may change, so it is best to check before your visit.
Camden County has various nature trails for hiking or biking, with Kingsland serving as the hub for these offerings. The landscapes of parks around Kingsland include shady forests, winding wetlands and expansive salt marshes. Nature trails in Camden County and the variety of landscapes in parks around Kingsland represent two distinct nature themes.
Laurel Island Links is an 18-hole links-style golf course with marsh views and a signature design by Davis Love III. The range of leisure activities therefore extends from hiking or biking on nature trails to a round of golf on a course overlooking the marsh.
Dining in Kingsland
Kingsland’s dining scene includes locally caught seafood, Southern cuisine, and cozy cafés and bakeries. This adds a variety of dining and break options to your trip planning and rounds out the different ways to spend your stay.
