Discover Metter: Festival, History and Golf
Accommodation in Metter
Different interests can shape your trip to Metter: history and architecture, a festival, golf, or animal encounters. The historic Georgia route of the Woodpecker Trail passes through Metter; Willow Lake Golf Course is right at the city limits, on Highway 23 North.
A Festival Connected to Downtown
The 2025 edition of the Another Bloomin’ Festival continued a tradition spanning more than 30 years and drew thousands of visitors to the downtown park area of Metter. The festival featured more than 30 food vendors and more than 180 vendors offering arts and crafts, art, and merchandise. This gives travelers a concrete reason to combine their stay with a varied festival program. If you plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition before finalizing your hotel plans.
Architecture, Museums, and History
The South Metter Residential Historic District covers 67 acres and features divided avenues. Its homes are distinguished by their architectural design and landscaping, along with the neighborhood’s original grid layout. The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its historic character encompasses both individual homes and the layout of the neighborhood.
Individual buildings also connect architectural history with their uses. Old Lake Church was built in 1839 and is the oldest church in Candler County, Georgia. Built in 1928 and restored, the Lumber Commissary served as accommodation and a supply point for timber workers in the 1930s. Today, it houses the Metter Welcome Center.
The Candler County History Museum presents the agricultural, architectural, and cultural way of life of several generations of Candler County residents. Schedule tours by appointment only and confirm the arrangements before your visit. The History Museum of the Candler County Historical Society is located in the renovated 1921 Metter High School building. Together, these topics offer a look at both the buildings and the ways of life that form part of the county’s history.
Another historic point of interest is the Woodpecker Trail, also known as the Woodpecker Route. Its historic route through Georgia passed through Metter; it was later given a highway designation. Those interested in the development of roads and regional connections will find a distinct way to explore the town’s history here.
Gardens, Animals, and Nature
Guido Gardens was originally created as a filming location for the television program “Seeds For The Garden of Your Heart.” This background sets the gardens apart from the historic buildings and museums and may be of particular interest to travelers interested in gardens and television productions.
Wild Georgia Safari Park operates year-round as a petting zoo and safari experience. At the petting zoo, visitors can touch and feed domesticated farm animals. Opening hours and activities may change, so check before your visit.
Near Metter, Charles Harrold Preserve protects 73 acres of ecologically significant land in Candler County, in eastern Georgia. In April 2026, the preserve was temporarily closed to visitors while restoration work continued following damage from Hurricane Helene. Before planning a trip there, check whether its visitor status has changed.
Choose a Focus for Your Trip
The topics above offer different experiences: the festival centers on food, art, and merchandise, while the historic district and museums highlight architectural history and regional ways of life. The golf course, safari park, and preserve offer additional options, though visitors should note the temporary closure of the preserve reported in April 2026.
