Carroll County: Nature, Culture and History
Accommodation in Carroll County
When traveling to Carroll County, you can focus on nature trails, culture or history. The destinations stand out for specific features: nature trails and a paved loop, museums with a textile focus, and historic buildings and sites. Consider what kind of destination you want to shape your trip; this gives your hotel search a clear focus.
Trails and Landscapes
For outdoor trails, length, surface and landscape are different points of comparison. Little Tallapoosa Park has 7 miles of nature trails. The Carrollton GreenBelt is a paved loop more than 18 miles long. Nature trails and a paved loop therefore represent different types of routes, and their lengths can also be compared. Historic Banning Mills offers scenic and historic hiking trails along Snake Creek Gorge. These trails combine hiking with an explicitly scenic and historic setting. For your plans, you can compare options by distance, surface or this distinctive setting.
Textile Traditions and Museums
The Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum has three galleries and offers educational programs about textile traditions. It is housed in a former cotton goods warehouse in Carrollton. This brings together two perspectives: textile traditions as a museum subject and the building’s former use as a warehouse for cotton goods. The galleries and educational programs offer different ways to explore textiles, while the building type adds its own historical context.
Historic Sites
Wicks Tavern was built around 1830 and is the oldest surviving commercial building in Carroll County. The Curtis-Marlow-Perry House in Carrollton was also built around 1830 and was deeded to the City of Carrollton for use by the Carroll County Historical Society. Both buildings were constructed at roughly the same time, but their historical associations differ: Wicks Tavern is notable as the oldest surviving commercial building, while the Curtis-Marlow-Perry House was deeded for use by the Historical Society. Fourteen paintings by Jean Grunwald depict scenes from Carroll County.
Outdoor Activities
Camping is available at John Tanner Park, which also has a large sandy beach. These are two different features of the same park: camping as an overnight option and the beach as another destination during your stay. Visitors can hike at McIntosh Reserve Park. The park also includes the site of McIntosh’s plantation, also known as Lochau Talofau or Acorn Bluff. Here, hiking opportunities meet an explicitly named historical association.
Market and Arrival
Vendors at the Cotton Mill Farmers Market must produce their goods in Carroll County, an adjoining county, or within 50 miles of downtown Carrollton. The radius specifically refers to downtown Carrollton. The origin rule therefore covers more than Carroll County alone: adjoining counties and the specified radius also qualify. West Georgia Regional Airport serves commercial and private recreational air traffic.
