East Point combines a focus on track cycling with parks, nature destinations and culture. When planning your hotel stay, it makes sense to first consider the purpose of your visit: an event at the velodrome, park trails, sports facilities or a cultural visit each has a different focus.

Track Cycling in East Point

The Dick Lane Velodrome in East Point is a 1/5-mile bicycle racing track. Its turns have a maximum banking angle of 36 degrees. The length describes the circuit, while the banking angle is another technical measure. For anyone interested in track cycling, the velodrome is a clearly defined activity. The Beginners’ Program lets adults learn to ride track bikes before moving on to the weekly racing program.

The cycling focus continues in a different way at Sykes Park. A central loop includes hybrid-flow and cross-country trails. Difficulty levels range from beginner to intermediate, with more challenging offshoots as well. Cyclists can also use a pump track and two practice areas in the park. Old trees, large rock gardens and massive granite boulders add distinctive landscape features to the sports facilities.

Trails and Nature in Two Parks

For comparison, Connally Nature Park offers a one-mile trail for hiking, cycling and walking. While Sykes Park is defined by its trail types and difficulty levels, the trail length at Connally provides a specific point of reference for planning. Atlanta’s champion white oaks have stood in Connally Nature Park since 1991. Rare pink lady’s slipper orchids bloom there in April and May; the flowering period may vary.

More Sports and Cultural Attractions

Georgia Sports Park includes six professional-quality soccer fields on 100 acres of green space. It also has nature trails, baseball fields, pickleball courts and covered basketball courts. Several high-quality soccer fields have natural grass.

The East Point Historical Society is a nonprofit 501C history museum. The Black Art in America Gallery is located at 1802 Connally Drive, East Point, Georgia 30344. If you’d like to include culture in your visit, you can distinguish between the two attractions by format: a history museum and a gallery.

Market, Blooming Season and Getting There

The East Point Farmers Market takes place every Wednesday. Its offerings include fresh local produce, baked goods, eggs, meat, jellies, jams, honey and coffee. If the market is important to you, check before traveling whether your stay includes a Wednesday. When planning your dates, note that this weekly event differs from the seasonal orchid bloom in April and May, whose timing may vary.

East Point is the second MARTA station from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. If you plan to use MARTA to get there, check the appropriate schedule before your trip.
