Mcdonough: Museums, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Mcdonough
In Mcdonough, you can choose different focuses for your trip: local history, photography, architecture or agriculture. The attractions explore these themes in different ways. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around the interests that matter most to you while you’re there.
Museums and Local History
The C.O. Polk Interactive Museum is housed in the historic 1940s post office on the Square. A 15-foot digital timeline and projection-mapped displays of the historic Town Square offer different perspectives: the timeline places history in chronological order, while the projections make the square itself the subject of the display. The history of the Blacksville community is also included. It is presented through a multi-part digital artifact theater and a documentary.
The Camera Museum is devoted to the development of photography, from its beginnings in the 1830s to the start of the digital age in the 1990s. Its timeframe therefore spans the medium’s early years through a later technological turning point. The museum also has rooms for photography classes and workshops. Its location is precise: the Camera Museum is less than a mile south of McDonough Square, on Highway 42, known as Macon Street.
Another way to explore McDonough’s history is the Re-Taking History Walking Tour. Its 15 stops follow a route through downtown. The markers show historic photographs of notable attractions, then and now. Audio stories explore McDonough’s cotton heritage as well as the history of train and bus depots. The stops thus bring together visual material and themes that show the city’s history from different perspectives.
Architecture and Historic Sites
The Henry County Courthouse stands on the historic Courthouse Square. The building dates from 1897 and is designed in the Romanesque Revival style. The historic Courthouse Square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The two details refer to different things: the year and architectural style describe the courthouse, while the listing applies to the square.
Heritage Park’s historic village includes a settler’s log cabin dating from 1827, a two-room schoolhouse and a steam locomotive from around 1934. The Veterans Museum is also in Heritage Park, housed in a red barn. On display are donated artifacts, uniforms and a Huey helicopter. Free tours of the museum are led by volunteer veterans. The village, school, locomotive and museum each offer a different historical focus within the park.
Seasonal Activities and Park Information
Southern Belle Farm is a family-owned agricultural operation covering 330 acres. Seasonal activities include picking your own strawberries in a 15-acre strawberry field; strawberries are available only during the growing season. Berry and peach picking are also offered seasonally. If you’re planning one of these activities, check in advance whether it will be available when you visit. The farm market and bakery are also among the seasonal offerings.
For the fall 2026 season, Southern Belle Farm offers educational visits for school groups. Topics include agriculture, farm animals, crops and where food comes from. These topics give a group visit a different focus than the seasonal harvest activities. There is also a concession stand at the amphitheater in Alexander Park in Mcdonough.
