Accommodation in Paulding County
Paulding County brings together a history dating back to its founding in 1832, historic sites, and outdoor offerings. Pickett’s Mill brings Civil War history to life on the ground. Historic school and museum buildings add to this theme; hiking trails, a wildlife management area, and a nature program appeal to other interests. When looking for a hotel in Paulding County, it helps to first decide whether history, nature, or outdoor activity will shape your stay.
Founding and Early History
Paulding County was established on December 3, 1832, as Georgia’s 89th county. It was named after John K. Paulding, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. Also in 1832, the county was divided into 40-acre “Gold Lots” for the Gold Lottery. But the history encompasses more than the lottery: some settlers remained in the county for agricultural purposes, and farming became the primary occupation. The land division and agriculture thus represent distinct historical themes.
Pickett’s Mill and the Civil War
Paulding County is known for its role in the American Civil War. Pickett’s Mill is considered one of the best-preserved Civil War battlefields in the United States. Visitors can follow roads used by Union and Confederate troops, see earthworks built by those troops, and walk through the ravine where hundreds died. Pickett’s Mill Battlefield State Historic Site has four miles of hiking trails. The roads, earthworks, and ravine offer different impressions of this historic site.
The programs at Pickett’s Mill also cover a range of topics. One program explores the lives of rural households in mid-19th-century Georgia. During a visit, students can also learn about the equipment, food, and social life of Union and Confederate soldiers. Staff members in period clothing lead the programs. Depending on the program, activities may include a museum tour, a guided battlefield hike, a student formation, a portrayal of soldiers’ lives, or musket firing.
Schools, Museums, and Historic Buildings
Hiram Rosenwald School opened in 1930 as Hiram Colored School and was the only Rosenwald School in Paulding County. The Paulding County Historical Society Museum contains artifacts and memorabilia. The Historical Society grounds also include the Little Red Schoolhouse Museum, built in the 1860s, and a historic Old Jailhouse made of hand-hewn logs.
Fannin-Cooper Farm includes a main house, several historic outbuildings, and historic farmland. The main house is considered an outstanding and intact example of a late 19th-century farm in Paulding County; its historical significance lies in the fields of agriculture and architecture. Visitors interested in architectural history will find a tangible connection here to the county’s agricultural past.
Nature, Fishing, and Trails
Paulding Forest Wildlife Management Area is located in Paulding and Polk counties and covers 25,707 acres. Raccoon Creek, within the area, offers one of the southernmost opportunities for trout fishing. A nature program at Pickett’s Mill explores the forests, streams, and wildlife through a nature hike and activities focused on wildlife observation and exploring nature. Tara Drummond Memorial Park provides access to the Silver Comet Trail.
These offerings have different focuses: the WMA combines a large area with a specific fishing opportunity, while the nature program highlights forests, water, and wildlife observation. Access to the Silver Comet Trail is another option for travelers who want to include a trail in their plans.
