Plant Knowledge and Visiting Hours
At the Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center in Blairsville, the Ethnobotanical Garden illustrates how the ancestors and Indigenous peoples of North America used plants for food, fiber and medicine. The center also includes the Woodland Medicine Trail, which offers a short walk. The center’s gardens are open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; the gates close at 5 p.m. Both times are important for planning: visiting hours end at 4:30 p.m., and the gates close at 5 p.m.
Outdoor Activities and Excursions
At Vogel State Park, options in a varied mountain landscape include hiking, swimming and fishing. Lake Trahlyta, the lakeside loop trail and the waterfall are closed for dam rehabilitation; other park facilities remain open. Check the status of these closures in advance when planning a visit.
Meeks Park has an 18-hole disc golf course with open and wooded holes across mixed terrain. Meeks Park 2 has a canoe and kayak launch. The parks therefore offer different activities: disc golf at Meeks Park and a canoe and kayak launch at Meeks Park 2.
In the wider region, Brasstown Bald can be reached from Blairsville via U.S. 19 and 129, Georgia 180 and Georgia Spur 180. Trackrock Stables is listed as a local riding stable offering trail rides in the Blairsville–Union County area; its address is 202 Trackrock Camp Road, Blairsville, Georgia.
History and Literature
On the square in downtown Blairsville stands the Historic Courthouse and Museum, a courthouse built in 1899 of Romanesque brick and granite that serves as a museum of local history. The building is also part of the Mountain Life Museum. The museum also includes the 1906 Butt/Mock Home, the 1861 John Payne Cabin, the Duncan Cabin dating to around 1830, and a corncrib from the late 19th century. The dates therefore range from around 1830 to 1906, making it possible to compare several periods.
The Byron Herbert Reece Farm & Heritage Center is located at the birthplace and on the land that inspired writer and Appalachian poet Byron Herbert Reece. The center offers a self-guided tour of the farm and includes a museum and gift shop. The focus here is the connection between the farm, the birthplace and literary inspiration.
Seasonal Dates
The Union County Farmers Market offers produce from local vendors as well as specialty goods. Its seasonal schedule runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays from June through October, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. Check the dates in advance, as the schedule may change.
