Lookout Mountain: Rock Landscapes, Nature, and Fairytale Places
Accommodation in Lookout Mountain
Rock formations, nature, and fairytale-inspired attractions offer different ways to enjoy a stay at Lookout Mountain. Rock City brings geology and scenic views together; Lula Lake requires planning around reservations and designated access dates. Other attractions include the Fairy Trail Garden and storybook-themed destinations such as Fairyland Caverns and Mother Goose Village. You can organize your trip around your specific interests while taking Lula Lake’s special requirements into account when planning.
Rock City: Rock Formations and Scenic Views
Rock City is located in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, just across the border from Tennessee and about a 10-minute drive from downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee, at an elevation of 1,700 feet above sea level. Road conditions and transportation options may change. The attraction was built around unusual rock formations created by millions of years of erosion of the native sandstone.
At Lover’s Leap, Rock City offers the view known as “See Seven States”; the Swing-A-Long Bridge is nearly 200 feet long. Rock City first opened to the public on May 21, 1932. The attraction hosts numerous special events and festivals throughout the year. Event dates may change, so check the date if a particular event affects your travel plans.
Nature Themes and Visit Planning
The Fairy Trail Garden features a winding woodland path and adds one acre, or 43,560 square feet, of pollinator habitat to the mountain. It also serves as a refuge for pollinators and wildlife. The garden thus combines a woodland path with a clearly defined habitat theme.
Lula Lake’s Core Preserve is located at 5000 Lula Lake Road, Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Reservations are required to visit Lula Lake. It is open to the public on the designated Public Access Dates on the first and last weekends of each month; dates may change. Check the dates that apply to your visit before making plans.
The round-trip trail from the parking lot to the falls is approximately 4.2 miles long and takes two to three hours. You can set aside your own block of several hours for this route. Its stated length and duration give you a framework for planning your day if you want to visit the falls.
Fairytale Themes and Local Highlights
Fairyland Caverns features dioramas of classic fairytales, while Mother Goose Village presents an imaginative world of children’s stories. The difference is in the format: Fairyland Caverns displays individual fairytale scenes in dioramas; Mother Goose Village presents the theme as a storybook world. Together, they offer two distinct types of fairytale-inspired design.
Joe Wilson Park was dedicated in November 2016 in honor of Joe Wilson. Walkways along Lula Lake Road lead to the park. Hiking, cycling, and sightseeing are popular activities in and around Lookout Mountain, adding local recreational options to the individual attractions.
The requirements for each visit differ when planning your trip: at Lula Lake, you need to account for reservations, Public Access Dates, and the several-hour trail; at Rock City, event dates may be a deciding factor. If you want to include both in your trip, check the dates for each separately.
