When looking for a hotel in Hana, you can begin by considering the coastal landscape, historic sites, and the journey there. The Hāna Highway (HI-360) has 620 curves and 59 bridges. The drive from Kahului to Hana can take two to four hours; traffic and road conditions affect the actual journey time. Check road conditions before setting out and treat this timeframe as a guide rather than a fixed arrival time. From Hana, you can reach the Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park by driving another 12 miles along the Hāna Highway. Be sure to take road conditions into account for this additional drive as well.

Coast and Local Planning

Hāna Beach Park features a striking black sand beach and expansive views of the Pacific. It is also the venue for the annual Hāna Canoe Regatta. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates for your travel period. At Hāmoa Beach, the beach lies off Haneoʻo Road, and access is via stairs. Bear this stair access in mind if Hāmoa Beach is part of your travel plans.

In the wider Hana area, Waiʻānapanapa State Park has a black sand beach. Visitors without reservations are turned away. Plan a visit only with a reservation, and check the current requirements before driving there. This makes it possible to plan the park as a separate stop, distinct from the coastal sites whose features here relate to the beach, views, or access.

Historic Sites and Cultural Insights

Wananalua Congregational Church is significant for its connection to western settlement in the Hana area. It has remained in continuous operation to this day. Hana Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Attached directly to it is Hana Lockup, originally built in 1871. The church, courthouse, and lockup thus point to different aspects of Hana’s history: a church that remains in operation, a listed courthouse, and an attached structure with a specific year of origin.

The Hana Cultural Center & Museum displays old photographs of figures from Hana’s past in its “Faces of Hana” exhibit. The Hana Cultural Center Museum & Gift Shop is not open on a regular basis; special visits are available by request. If you would like to include the museum in your plans, arrange a visit in advance. While the exhibit presents the past through photographs, Kauhale Village is a reconstruction of a chief’s homestead from the pre-European-contact period.

Kahanu Garden also offers different ways to explore history and culture. The garden offers self-guided tours; you can also explore it with a guide who shares insights into plants, history, and cultural traditions. Piʻilanihale Heiau, a Hawaiian place of worship, is located in Kahanu Garden. It is a National Historic Landmark and the largest single heiau in all of Polynesia. Its construction took place in several phases, beginning as early as the 13th century. Its building history therefore spans a long period, while its designation as a landmark adds another dimension to Hana’s cultural heritage.
