If you are considering a hotel stay in Blaine, you can plan your trip around different interests: winter sports, paths through the landscape, gardens and museums offer a variety of ways to spend your days.

Winter Sports and Outdoor Trails

At Sun Valley, the ski area across two different mountains offers 3,400 vertical feet and more than 2,500 acres of varied terrain. The winter sports areas can be reached via River Run or Warm Springs on Bald Mountain, or via Dollar Mountain. As access information may change seasonally, it is a good idea to check the latest guidance before your visit.

For a different kind of activity, there is the Wood River Trail: This paved trail is more than 20 miles long, open year-round and intended for various non-motorized activities. The Toe of the Hill Trail runs for two miles along the foothills east of the Woodside residential area. It is open to pedestrians, cyclists, horseback riders and dogs; local conditions may change seasonally.

Different interests also come together at Boxcar Bend Preserve. The area is located along Highway 75, just north of East Fork, and is used by hikers and cyclists as well as anglers and people interested in wildlife. The Blaine County Recreation District has a 100-mile trail network in the Wood River Valley. The Hailey Greenway, in turn, includes land along 1.5 miles of the Big Wood River, from Bullion Street Bridge to Colorado Gulch Road. It includes approximately 350 acres and two public parks.

The trail information highlights their differences: the Wood River Trail is a long, paved, year-round multi-use trail; the Toe of the Hill Trail has a specified length, route and permitted user groups. At Boxcar Bend, the focus is on several recreational interests, including fishing and wildlife observation.

Gardens, Museums and Regional Culture

The Sawtooth Botanical Garden showcases native and cultivated plants that thrive at high elevations. Education, events, exhibits and plant collections are part of its offerings and support environmental awareness. The Hailey Native Plant Arboretum focuses on native and drought-tolerant trees and plants. It can be reached via a parking lot beside the Wood River Trail.

The museums focus on other subjects. The Blaine County Historical Museum covers the settlers, the early industries of the Wood River Valley, and notable people and places in Blaine County in its permanent exhibits. The Wood River Museum of History + Culture presents public exhibits about central Idaho. At the entrance, its Tribal Room recognizes the history and present-day communities of the Shoshone and Bannock tribes. Admission to this museum is free; it is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Check the schedule before your visit.

The Sun Valley Museum of Art presents contemporary art exhibitions and public programs throughout the year. It also offers free evening tours led by its curatorial team. Those interested in literary history can find another point of connection in Ernest Hemingway: His ties to central Idaho spanned from his first visit to Sun Valley in 1939 until his death in 1961. The Hemingway Memorial is 1.5 miles east of Sun Valley Lodge. The Community Library offers an immersive, narrated Hemingway audio walk.

Events and a View of the Outdoors

The Trailing of the Sheep Festival is a five-day event featuring culinary events and cooking classes. The Big Sheep Parade leads 1,200 sheep down Main Street in Ketchum. Check the specific event dates and program before your trip. When choosing your travel dates, it is helpful to distinguish between an event with set dates and year-round offerings such as the Sun Valley Museum of Art exhibitions.

The night sky is also part of the region’s appeal: Ketchum and Sun Valley are within the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, considered America’s first dark-sky reserve. To reach Sun Valley by road, the route runs via Interstate 84, which connects to Idaho State Highway 75 or Highway 20 to the south and west.

The topics described can help you decide what to focus on during your stay in Blaine.
