When searching for a hotel in Dubois, it helps to first decide what brings you there: Would you like to explore the town’s history, plan around the Dubois Rodeo Weekend, or follow a particular route? These options differ in their geographic and time-related context.

Local History and Historic Sites

Dubois was named in 1892 after Fred Dubois (1851–1930), an influential politician in Idaho’s early years. Construction of the Old Dubois Jail began in early 1919. The two dates provide a chronological reference: they mark the town’s naming and the start of construction of the jail, two distinct aspects of local history.

Heritage Hall was originally built as a single-story Gothic Revival mission church. It was the first church in what is now Clark County. Today, the building houses a museum with memorabilia from Clark County. Its original religious function, architectural style, and current use as a museum can be considered together. Gothic Revival reintroduces forms of medieval Gothic architecture in later buildings; the term describes the style, not the building’s use as a church. “Single-story” describes the church’s height when it was built, while “mission church” describes its function at the time.

The sites of the Battle of Camas Meadows are 32 miles east of Dubois, Idaho. This distance places the sites clearly outside the town and helps you include them in your plans as a separate historical point of interest.

At the roadside kiosk at Captain Randolph B. Norwood’s Encounter Site, visitors can view interpretive panels and metal silhouettes of Nez Perce warriors. The wider site includes private property.

Routes and Driving Plans

The Lost Gold Trails Loop begins east of Dubois and runs north of Dubois along Old Highway 91 to Spencer. Be sure to account for seasonal road conditions when driving.

The Stoddard-Van Noy Trail is a six-mile loop that begins and ends at Stoddard Creek Campground. Unlike the Lost Gold Trails Loop, which runs to Spencer, this route returns to its starting point.

The seasonal County Route A-2 leads to Kilgore, as well as Island Park and St. Anthony. The latter two are in neighboring Fremont County. Road conditions may vary.

Planning Around Rodeo Weekend

The Dubois Rodeo Weekend takes place over a weekend in mid-June. Saturday’s events include a parade with mutton busting. Dates and program may vary from year to year.

The key planning consideration depends on your focus: For road routes, seasonal driving conditions matter; for the rodeo, check the specific dates and program for that year. Check road conditions before driving and event dates before planning your trip around them.
