Custer County: Hotels and Lakes
Accommodation in Custer County
Custer County in Idaho encompasses lakes, mountainous landscapes and places steeped in mining history. It makes sense to search for a hotel for your stay based on your chosen focus: Stanley Lake, Redfish Lake and the historic Yankee Fork region are not all in the same location. The old text promoted a global number of hotel listings that says nothing about rooms available in the county.
Lakes near Stanley
Stanley Lake is in Custer County and can be reached from Stanley via State Highway 21 and Stanley Lake Road. Redfish Lake is also in the county. The source figures give areas of 185.5 acres for Stanley Lake and 1,504.8 acres for Redfish Lake; they describe different bodies of water, not the distances between them. If you choose a lake as your destination, check access, weather and the activities actually available at the time. Simply mentioning a lake does not establish that there are hotel rooms on its shore or boat rentals.
Yankee Fork and mining history
The Land of the Yankee Fork Historic Area preserves traces of mining settlements. The Yankee Fork Gold Dredge was a 988-ton dredge that searched for gold in the gravel until 1952. At the Interpretive Center, a short paved path explains the Challis Bison Kill Site. For visitors interested in technology and history, these are different stops; check current opening hours.
Today, the Custer Motorway follows a historic toll road for around 46 miles. It consists of gravel and dirt and is not recommended for vehicles with low ground clearance or trailers. This restriction is more important for hotel and day-trip planning than the sheer length of the route. Choose a route suited to your vehicle and current conditions; standard hotel offerings do not include off-road transportation.
Towns and choosing a hotel
The directory has separate pages for Stanley and Challis. These towns can be compared as geographic starting points; linking to them does not establish specific availability. For your selected hotel, check the address, rooms, access and conditions, especially if you plan to drive on an unpaved road.
