In Fremont County, high-elevation lakes, natural springs and rushing rivers shape the landscape. In the north of the county, Island Park lies in a high-elevation basin formed by an ancient caldera. The Island Park Caldera measures 18 miles wide and 23 miles long. This geological scale gives Fremont a distinctive profile. At the same time, the area offers everything from nature watching to activities on trails and regional history. When planning your trip, you can prioritize these different themes according to your interests.

Springs, Trout and White Sand Dunes

Henry's Fork begins at Big Springs. Large trout can be seen in its clear water. Big Springs is also home to Johnny Sack's handcrafted cabin and a working waterwheel. This natural destination brings together a spring, wildlife watching and historic features.

The St. Anthony Sand Dunes offer a very different landscape. They cover 10,600 acres of pure, shifting white quartz sand and can be explored on horseback or on foot. As seasonal access rules may change, check local requirements before your visit.

Trails and Outdoor Recreation

Harriman State Park offers 22 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding; seasonal trail closures may apply. Sand Creek WMA has 8 miles of non-motorized trails along the Sand Creek ponds and in the Chester Wetlands. Comparing the trail lengths and activities, Harriman State Park has the longer designated route and three explicitly listed activities.

Winter recreation is also part of what Fremont County has to offer, including snowmobile routes and cross-country ski trails. Around Ashton, there are also cycling routes on lightly traveled public roads. Check route availability locally before setting out on a bike ride. The options vary by season and activity, so you don’t have to limit your trip to just one way of enjoying the outdoors.

Places with Regional History

The Ashton-Tetonia Trail passes the old Pillsbury Mills Elevator in France, Idaho, a historic grain silo. Camas Meadows was the site of the August 20 battle during the Nez Perce flight in 1877. The two places highlight different aspects of history: one is linked to a structure along a trail, the other to an event from 1877.

The Island Park Land and Cattle Company Home Ranch is a private seasonal retreat. Its significance to the development of the Island Park region in northeastern Idaho as a major recreation destination makes it eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion A. A visitor area also includes Upper Mesa Falls, Lower Mesa Falls, the Big Falls Inn Visitors Center and walking trails.

Planning Your Trip

Island Park is about 20 minutes from the western entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Road and seasonal conditions can affect travel time, so treat this estimate as approximate. When looking for a hotel in Fremont, you can start by deciding whether nature watching, trails, winter recreation or regional history will be the focus of your stay. This way, you can plan your trip around the experiences that matter to you.
