In June, the Emmett Cherry Festival brings together the community of Emmett and all of Gem County. Nearby, historic buildings tell stories from different chapters of local history, while the Montour Wildlife/Recreation Management Area encompasses wetlands and ponds. These themes give your trip different focal points: community events, cultural history, or outdoor activities.

June in Emmett: Festival and Farmers Market

The Emmett Cherry Festival takes place during the second full week of June. Since the 1930s, it has brought the Emmett and Gem County community together each June. Traditional events, concerts, and the fair are held Wednesday through Saturday at Emmett City Park. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, use this recurring weekly schedule as a guide.

The Emmett Farmers Market also has a specific connection to seasonal fruit: in June, it mainly features cherries, along with some vegetables. The market is held at Blaser Park in downtown Emmett. The festival and market offer different June highlights—several days of events, concerts, and a fair at one, seasonal produce at the other.

Other events draw on local traditions and agriculture. The Gem County Harvest Festival Street Fair celebrates local agriculture and includes live music and free movie screenings. During the Gem/Boise County Fair, the PRCA Black Canyon Stock Show & Rodeo is held at the Gem County Fairgrounds. For trip planning, it’s worth checking the specific dates of these events; the Cherry Festival is scheduled for the same week each June.

Scenery and activities around Montour

The Montour Wildlife/Recreation Management Area encompasses a 1.7-square-mile, or 1,105-acre, wetland and pond area above Black Canyon Reservoir. The area offers opportunities for camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing. There are also fishing opportunities in the adjacent Payette River. If fishing is your main focus, you can distinguish between the management area and the neighboring river; the other activities mentioned are available in the area.

For orientation in Gem County, Little Gem is about 20 miles northwest of Boise, east of Emmett at the turnoff from Highway 16.

Museums and architectural history

The Gem County Historical Society and Museum, also called the Gem County Historical Village Museum, is a complex of five buildings. It is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of Gem County. The museum is open year-round, and admission is free. Regular hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.; visits by appointment are also available. If you’re planning a visit, you can check the opening hours in advance.

The Hunt House is now a museum exhibit featuring possessions of Governor Hunt and his family. The Gem County Courthouse offers another historical perspective: it was built in 1938–1939 and is a concrete building in a relatively restrained, classical Art Deco style. Architecture is listed as an area of significance. The Freezeout Hill Monument was erected in 1928.

The Sweet Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1905. Local residents who were familiar with the traditional Gothic Revival design of rural Protestant churches contributed to its construction.

The Burkhard-Stewart Building retains many original features, including hardwood floors, metal ceiling tiles, and exterior brickwork bearing painted historic advertisements. The building is also part of community events, including the Christmas Parade, Harvest Festival, Cherry Festival Parade, and Homecoming Parade. The Ola Schoolhouse also hosts numerous community events.

Historic sites in Emmett

The Oregon Short Line Railway Depot, also known as the Emmett Depot, is at the north end of Commercial Avenue in downtown Emmett. Southeast of it is the small triangular Railroad Park, with lawns and mature trees.

To plan your stay, first consider the purpose of your trip: the second full week of June is key for the Cherry Festival, cherries take center stage at the Farmers Market in June, and the museum is open year-round. Architectural history, community events, and activities in the Montour area add further themes to explore during your time in Gem County, beyond these seasonal highlights.
